Please critique my site - 6/21/2001 20:03:00
I have a genealogy research site and want to change my home page some. It seems boring to me. I want to keep it compact so people do not have to scroll forever to find links. What are your thoughts on that?
I believe that a lot of people have 15 inch moniters yet and try to keep the page the size that reads to these people.
Should that be a concern??
Thanks for looking.

This is my first response- so here goes.
A home page should be simple and to the point.
Do Aphorisms fit in the general message of the page? Perhaps another page would be better and reduce the scrolling on that page. I noticed "My Favorite" is underlined, I thought it was a link since the convention is underline links.
Weather reports on a genealogy page?

You have used the first table well considering all the information you are putting out. I tried the flags as links thinking it might bring me somewhere.

I like the high contrast between background color and letters, but going from yellow to blue sort of shocked my eyes when I followed the link.
Overall, I liked the way you handled so much information on the pages.

I viewed your site on my little laptop (12 inch screen) and it's fine in that regard - 4 clicks on the page down for the whole home page and no side scrolling.

It is rather 'link heavy' on the front page. Perhaps make some separate 'links' pages for the different countries (with a bit more info re the links) with perhaps a few nice graphics to break up the home page would make it more attractive - and easier to follow.

Hej! Jerry - det virkelige flot side, men du har en (maske to) problemer. Skaerm storhed er det ikke. Det bare at man skal laese og laese og laese .....

Sadan - Forstar ikke? OK taler vi Engelsk nu.

Wow even on an English keyboard minus the other characters my typing accuracy "er bedre pa Dansk."

It's a nice page I liked it but it has way too much on it. This is a real case of "less is more" To answer your question though yes it's a *really good* idea to design for 15" monitors - there are an awful lot of them out there.

In fact when I critique here or protoype a site for a client I use a very low spec machine for that reason. If it looks good on an average or belwo average system it'll look great on a mid-range system.

Definitely having all the aphorism isn't a good idea - try just having one with a link to others.

I alway tell people to avoid underlining text like the plague - it confuses your visitors because they assume it'll be a link.

Do you need the weather link and the two counters? Fascinating page - tiny bit of tweaking in the direction of simplicity will make it even better.

Oh I looked at it using opera btw - it's a less forgiving browser than most so now you know it works for opera too.

Thanks for looking at my web site and suggesting changes. I have made some changes and will be making more.
The one change I have been thinking about is the one Janet mentioned, to have a few links go to another page and have all the links on that page and explain what is on the pages. Such as a page for Swedish research, one for USA and so on.
Thanks again,
Jerry
