Updating site for Site Impaired - 6/21/2001 14:48:00

I did not realize until recently that the little pop up text on graphics were for the site impaired! I thought it was just for looks, duh!! Anyways, if you could check our site out and give me an Idea of the best way to do this, I would appreciate it. Any other comments are also welcomed.

A. for #1 Question: How about the address and phone?!!!

Well, you asked for Accessibility help:
First, turn off your browser images. Your site makes no sense!

Images need ALT tags; Hot Spots, hyperlink Text and Sound need TITLE tags. Your navigation buttons have black letters on a blue background with no tags so both color impaired and blind folks can't navigate.

The easiest thing is to go to BOBBY and let them do their thing on an HTML page and then read their voluminous information.

Also check out:
<http://html.about.com/compute/html/cs/accessibility/index.htm>
and
<http://www.microsoft.com/enable/dev/web/checklist.htm>

I've been reading all day and I have to do some major re-work (and I thought I knew something);

I'm having trouble with FP2000 and shared borders using TITLE information, but I might crack it by tonight- otherwise it will be a post.

That all said, I actually like your site! 8-)
I like the use of white space and the way it has a clean and unhurried feel. It's quick to load and easy to navigate (for me). Nice job- now go to BOBBY!

Hi i did a huge posting on this for cavalier lady's site a while back. pasting in the relevant bits here:

/begin pasted/

What I *am* suggesting is that as you already give a good and ethically run/based service that you have a think about ways of letting people with special needs know about it.
If you're interested and have any spare time (interesting concept that - hmm - "spare time" I wonder what it means.) Here's a few links to get started
for a good overview and a wonderful set of links start here:
http://html.about.com/compute/html/cs/accessibility/index.htm
(By the way the about guide for this topic pleads with people to let her know when you do such pages and recommends such sites to visitors.)
Microsoft have some fabulous stuff too, start with these:
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/dev/web/checklist.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/dev/web/HTML.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/dev/web/resources.htm
and here's the link to their resources page :-)
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/dev/web/resources.htm
Not to be out-done IBM have also some great stuff - I love their checklist:

Kind regards,
Mark

Hi.

To add alt text to your graphics: right click on the graphic > Picture Properties > type in a concise description of the image.

If it is a graphic for a headline, type in the word(s) on the headline. If it's a picture for eye appeal, type in a few words of description. This is a good place to repeat your keywords if the graphic lends itself to that. Just don't get too wordy. Keep them short.

Another tip...where you can, or where it's not going to affect the appearance of the page, use text instead of graphics...such as where you have your contact information.

Unasked for advice....

I would do away with your splash page. It really doesn't add anything positive to your site. Only add the download buttons (Acrobat, Flash, etc.), where they are needed, and try to keep them as unobtrusive as possible. Suggesting a resolution in which to view a website is a tad tacky...and totally useless. No one will change their resolution to view a website.

It's also a good idea to repeat your main navigation at the bottom of your page. Text links would be really good.

Best wishes,
Sandy
