Critique Request - 6/25/2001 14:12:00
I used a template purchased through Outfront. It worked great for me. My main concern is that there are some problem areas when viewing in Netscape. Please share your impressions, thoughts and tips.

Hi Sherri,

Great idea for a site and very good use of a smart template.

I get the bottom left corner misaligned, it's only a pixel or so out but enough to make it look untidy.

I'd add text navigation to the bottom of each page particularly as when you get it one section, you need to get to home to go on to another. I'd also lose the link "Up" - I don't think any non-FP user will know where "up" goes.

Best of luck with the sales and before it goes live, remember to add the meta tags and alt information.

Cheers
Andy

Andy... were you viewing the site using Netscape or MIE? The bottom left corner looks perfect to me in MIE but not in Netscape. I've played with it before and if it looks okay in Netscape then it doesn't in MIE. I guess I'll try again.

Regarding the suggestion to add navigation links to the bottom of the page... I do have a link to the HOME page that remains constant at the top of the screen. Do you think a simple "Go Back" link at the bottom would suffice?

I already have a Title, Description and Keywords embedded on the default page. Are Meta tags different from keywords? What is the "alt" you referred to?

Sorry about all the questions. :-)

Hi Sherri,

I was looking in MSIE 5.5 and NN 4.75.

You have meta tags on your home page but not on the others, also you title at the moment is <title>Home Page</title> etc. better to make it more descriptive, around 10 words.

Alt information is for your images - right click on an image in FP and choose picture properties to add a few words describing each picture.

As you're using FP navigation it would be quite simple to add a horizontal text nav bar to thge bottom of each page - I think it would help.

Cheers
Andy

Works a treat under opera :-) - it's always a pleasure to see a really good product being used really well. Yuo mightl like to check the click to see cards links christmas, easter, and halloween seem to be the onlys ones that work.

Thank you Andy and Gorilla for the comments and suggestions. A couple thoughts back:

Andy - Is it still beneficial to place the keywords on all pages even though there isn't really anything different offered on the other pages? I figured the home page is where I want people to start. I don't think I would ever want them to jump into one of the other pages first. I can see why you would want to use keywords on all pages if you offer different services on each page.

Regarding the "Title" - Under Page Properties, Custom, I have "Cards for Kids" entered as the title. You're suggesting that I also change the title page info. under the General tab to a more lengthy description?

Comment to Gorilla - thank you for the site compliments. Much apreciated. Regarding the card sample images... I only have three of them currently available. I am still acquiring my inventory for the others. When you scroll over the image, you should see "Image Coming Soon" but I've noticed that message doesn't always appear in a timely fashion.

Comments from anyone regarding great, inexpensive marketing ideas?

Ah that explains it the text didn't show up for me but I wouldn't have hung around for it. When I'm doing these critiques I say to myself

"I'm an average surfer, that means I'm slightly bad tempered, am very impatient, don't really know what I'm doing, and to top it off I can feel a headache starting"

- not necessarily true of course but I've found that designing my sites with that as my target audience helps me a lot.

I'd say yes about the descriptions and tags. There's a great set of tutorials about all of this at

http://www.htmlgoodies.com/ and the points made at http://www.selfpromotion.com/ I reckon come under the heading of "words of wisdom."

PS: Despite what you might think from the above I'm actually quite a nice simian with a cheerful outlook on life! And i'm sorry but i can't resist this:

site critiques - "Grinning greying gaelic gorilla goes gleefully grumpy "
