Zycon -> Cannot create folder _vti_cnf (11/9/2003 14:24:21)

When I try to publish I get the message - Server Error: Cannot create folder _vti_cnf

I have used FP2K for months without having this problem suddenly today this message is appearing on two of my sites when I try to publish an update.

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

Sounds like extensions are corrupted - ask you hosting company to reinstall them. Also get them to check the permissions for those directories.

Thank you for your response. I have asked my hosting company to check that the extensions are OK. They said they would respond within 48 hours.

Please explain what you mean by ......get them to check the permissions for those directories.... - I apologise for my lack of understanding

Nothing to apologise for - everyone starts out new after all, and there is something new every day to make it even worse! [:)]

A very generalised answer is that the directories (folders are what they are called in Windows) and their contents have "permissions" set for them.

So for example people can view your pages but not edit them.

It sometimes can be that your hosting company may have overly restrictive permissions on the directories, perhaps as the result of an upgrade, a tightening of security and so on.

I don't know your urls so I don't know what yuo are hosted on - a unix/linux webserver or a windows one. The procedure is somewhat different for each but the effect is the same. You need to have the permissions to create, delete, edit, rename etc in those directories.

So just ask your hosting company to check that you have all the needed permissions.

The other thing that you can try is to first refesh in frontpage (click the refresh button - this clears frontpage's cache, then tools >recalculate. Then try to republish. I think this is unlikely to help, in your case but it can do no harm and has on occasion helped with this sort of thing.)

Thank you for your help. I did all that you suggested and nothing changed.

Contacted my ISP again and finally they put me through to their higher level of support. Asked if there were any restrictions on permissions and if all extensions were in place, not corrupted and working properly. They insisted all was as it should be. I was able to get my problems sent in writing to their engineering department.

Nobody admitted to anything but all is working well now after my discussions with the higher level of support.
