Internet Advertising Agency ?? - 11/12/2003 16:57:54
I have a web development firm with about 350 active clients. Recently some of my clients have approached me to research online advertisements for them on major websites such as weather.com, and other popular regional websites. I have been in communication with several of these websites and have found alot of them to be very easy to get along with, but for the most part they do not pay a referral fee like print magazines, etc. would to an ad agency. I wasn't really surprised especially since there is not really alot of revenue generated with online ad sales compared to print ads, but my question is this: Outside of the design of banner ads, how should we go about billing our clients for the following: 1. securing and placing online advertisements 2. research? (which sites would be most effective for our clients) 3. tracking and reporting results to them I am sure that this has came up with some of you all in the past and you have probably given it some thought, I would appreciate your comments or suggestions along these lines. This looks like a great forum and I am looking forward to being a part of this community. Thanks. Cotton Rohrscheib Powersite Design http://www.powersitedesign.com

I'm not sure if any one has but... Welcome to OutFront!!! I have not billed for this, I only do this portion for my own sites. However wouldn't that be a billable under an ad campaign as a whole? Your clients approached you for a specific request. You are fufilling that request with leg work and action. I'm sure others will chime in with their own experiences (better than my non real world ones in this genre). Look forward to reading more post from you. Take care, Brian

I do no think that I am but perhaps I may be a bit of an odd-ball. I consistantly charge my clients for time spent on research, negotiations, and implementation. They're not only hiring me for development/execution expertise, but also for my knowledge on leadership in helping to develop their business. That deserves compensation. I do, however, offer them a reduced rate vs that of final development and execution of the project. For example, $50/hour vs $85-120/hour. If they want ongoing custom comprehensive reporting, I'd start considering some type of system for managing it effectively and charge either a set fee or a maintenance fee for managing it. Of course, I am assuming your clients are going with the managed solution perspective. If not, they could go it alone and do as little or as much as they want without your assistance. quote:

Thanks for your posts. They are both very helpful. I think that we are going to start a new division and place a part time person in charge of doing this research in the nutshell for online advertising and just market it as and Ad Campaign as "Reflect" mentioned above. What I am trying to avoid is when we send out a bill to our clients, we always want them to feel like they are getting a great service for their money spent. If we can actually show this as a division and clearly state a pricing schedule for research on our website, etc. then we can justify or at least feel better about charging them for this work, because it is just that.... work. Thanks for your posts. This forum is going to be pretty cool.
