my first site - 7/19/2001 20:04:00
Well I may have jumped the gun by publishing this, but had to see what it looked like. It loads very slowly because it is graphic intensive (it is an artist's site). A friend suggested I could improve download time by changing all graphics to jpgs instead of gifs and bmps. Any one have a good idea about how I can do that? All imput would be appreciated and helpful. http://www.cascade.quik.com/drussel/

The good and the bad....

You're off to a very good start, but let me get the "bad" out of the way. All the movement is not good at all. It's fun as a new designer (I know cause we've all been there ) but it is not good from the viewer standpoint, especially on a business site.

The good news is you are doing great for a newbie! Things to do: use tables for arranging text and images on each page. On the home page, I'd suggest using much smaller photos and place the text in table cells next to the photos instead of using marquees. You want this information condensed and easily viewed. You can also click on a photo and align it left or right to have the text wrap next to it.

A note on tables, Do not drag the edges of the table or cells. It often will mess up the math and not show correctly in Netscape (to fix, change the cell properties so they add up correctly for the width of the table. Also, empty cells need to either be merged together or put a small transparent gif in them to keep them open in Netscape.
(some people use spaces; this isn't completely dependable but may work) More info at www.outfront.net/frontpagetables.htm

Use jpgs instead of gifs for photos as was suggested to you. An image editor normally comes with FP (Image Composer used to... I'm not sure what's with FP2002), or you might check out a 30-day demo of Paint Shop Pro from www.jasc.com . You'll want to open the original image in your graphics program and then save as a jpg. For any help you need with that, just post a question to the graphics forum.

Check out www.paypal.com if your friend is interested in online payment options.

Since Tim does logo design, have him make a logo for the site and use it at the top of each page with the name of the site. (ie. The Art of Tim Quinn). Have complete contact information on every page (either at the top or bottom would be good, but keep it consistent).

This consistent content can be inserted into shared borders or by using include pages. (create a page with just this "constant" info on it and save it as something like top.htm ....wherever you want to use this, Insert > Component > Include Page > top.htm) With these methods, it makes it easy to update something one time that's used on many pages.

As you have time, and he provides content, text description/information on his work would be good to go along with the images.

And now... I'm going to point out some things that I love about your site because you DIDN'T use them: no hover buttons, no frames, no music, no packaged FP theme provided by Microsoft. KUDOS! <please don't even go there -- for personal sites and experimentation only, but we can give you better stuff to fool around with for fun ...just ask. >

We're glad to have you here! I am looking forward to seeing what you do with this site. Very cool stuff here.

Linda

Hey Linda
Thanks for taking the time to check out the site and the helpful advice. I will take them under consideration. This is a great place to come for help, guidance and encouragement; and that is very important to us budding webmasters (masters of the universe?!)Thank you very much for sharing your time. I am also building a personal site but it is already up to about a gigabyte so obviously I have to do some editing to do, but as a lazy writer/poet it's easier to scan stuff in rather than retype it.
Thanks again for making me feel welcome here.

You really, really need to lower the file size of that index page. I waited six minutes and it never did fully load.

One whole page should be less than 100K. I believe I saw one graphic that was over 400?

That's something you will want to keep in mind while working on your personal site, too.

Keep plugging away.
