Spec. Sheet Page - 11/14/2003 17:09:18
I'm wanting to try and get our company away from paper price catalogs (AG Industry). Here's what I want to do: I want to be able to price out a unit according to the specs. Ex. Section 1 - Version 2wd - $17000 4wd - $21000 Section 2 - Transmission 8x2 - Included 16x16 - $800 24x24 - $1200 ....and so on. I'd like to be able to make a selection (and only one from most of them) from each section using a mix of radio buttons and check boxes, click a button at the bottom of the page, and print out a report w/ just the options selected and the total cost of the unit w/ options. I have no idea where to start on this project. There is a program that will do this for us at a cost of $25000. Doesn't hardly seem worth it. I had thought about just using Excel for the sake of simplicity. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like a perfect job for a database back-end... Have you looked into using a database and some server side scripting for this? The DRW in Front Page could likely handle this. Basically you build a database (MS-Access or MySQL for example) and put all of your options, pricing, spec's etc into the DB. You could then generate option lists from web forms, save visitors choices in case they want to come back, email results, create "printer friendly" pages, etc. It's more complex than basic HTML (we're talking about using CGI, PHP, or ASP, etc) but once you wrap your brain around the concept you'll freak out at what you're able to accomplish. Theres a good tutorial on the DRW if you follow the tutorial link at the top of the page to Spooky's Database pages. You might also take a peek around the Internet for downloadable scripts like those found at www.hotscripts.com and similar websites.
