Relocating an e-commerce site - 11/15/2003 11:53:58
I'm working on a redesign of a small, existing e-commerce site. The owner wants an entirely new backend system, and updated UI and a new web host. He has an SSL certificate for his current store that won't expire until 2005, and he'd like to use that for the new site (which will use the same domain).

My plan is to get the new site up-and-running on the new host, then update the DNS pointers for his domain to the new server, and put up a redirect message on the old site.

I haven't transferred an SSL certificate before, so I'm not sure what's involved in that process, and specifically the timing issue.

Any other suggestions or checklists for relocating an e-commerce site?

For the SSL just have them insert the code block just prior to the DNS change.

This is what I go by (VERY top level view):

1) Obtain new host.
2) Transfer files.
3) Get ODBC settings implemented.
4) Test DB connectivity using IP.
5) Test all cart functions.
6) Move SSL cert..
7) Test all SSL directory cart functions.
8) Point DNS.
9) Transfer DB over again (so you have all sales records).
9) Track log files HEAVILY.

Thank you, Reflect!

I think your list closely mirrors what I had in mind, though I was a little iffy on the SSL part.

I do have a question about item #9, which you seem to place special emphasis on. What in particular are you looking for when you say "Track log files HEAVILY?" What do you differently from your normal log file analysis, and for how long?

I look at the log heavily for the first week. I pay attention to session times. If they seem to have droppped over the previous site it normally will send red flags through my head. Just one example.
