Andy from Spain -> Changes on Google (11/15/2003 15:04:46)

Hi

I guess a few people will have seen some changes on Google listings today - are we seeing the death of reciprocal linking and dodgy techniques (for the time being) , or too early to tell?

Cheers
Andy

Shirley -> RE: Changes on Google (11/15/2003 21:07:30)

I stayed on top but some of the sites that were below me are GONE completely from the first couple of pages.

There are some sites listed for my search terms that have no relevancy whatsoever[sm=ask.gif]

manimal -> RE: Changes on Google (11/16/2003 2:17:13)

For my main keyword , my site is gone completely , right off the map !
But im still positioned the same with other keywords......weird. Hope it changes back :)

Hi,
it seems like a lot of index pages were dropped from google.
But, I don't think that it's the end of reciprocal linking, or anything like that.

I think the PR cycle will be coming. From what I am seeing it looks like the index got updated prior to the Pr. However whoever answers this one will win the prize.....first page.

I'm not seeing anything different today than any other time.

Tom,

It seems a lot of people lost their index page listings. I have heard major grumblings on a few forums now.

At this point it is up in the air on the algo change.

Gotzhaus -> RE: Changes on Google (11/19/2003 4:15:27)

I have seen in the past week that I come and go. I thought It was nothing more the Google reworking the data and nothing more. I hope that's it and nothing more.

Hi
I noticed my homepage has disappeared from google for 4 days now but i dont get why because I have not done anything wrong except optimised it better, but then others are still listed who are trying the dodgy tricks.

I just dont get it!
Does anyone know how i can get in touch with google to find out if someone has falsely reported me?

Duplicate post on my part:

Yup, you're not alone. I am today still seeing PR and back links fluctuating. I am thinking they are testing and refining in production (A big no no in my MIS world).

I wouldn't panic, let it settle down before making changes to your site.

Burglar -> RE: Changes on Google (12/2/2003 14:35:00)

I have the same problem as many of you and a thin theory to the cause.

Before I had a very good ranking on keywords that matched my domain namename. But now my indexpage has gone from page one to two.
So my theory is that google have taken away the importance of keywords in the domainname.

Any comments on my thoughts?

Claus

weightlosswayne -> RE: Changes on Google (12/2/2003 15:29:26)

Hi Burglar
I heard keywords in domain are a problem too!

Also that G may penalize sites that have reciprocal links from others sites with keywords in the link text. Which if true is crazy because I have just been listed in Open Directory and they link to my site like this "weight loss for all" instead of just www.weightlossforall.com

It seems to me "weight loss" has been a phrase targetted by G but I have no control over ODP listing me like this as they very often split words in the domain for many other sites.

Just came across this.....

http://www.theaxcess.net/money_01_1203.html

quote:

Google deploys major cut in web listings

December 1, 2003 (Axcess News) - In the early moments of this summer's energy blackout, people across the Northeast shared the same fear - terrorists had struck again.

A very similar and real event happened recently with the largest search engine online - Google, that's sent thousands of website owners into a panic.

With no advance warning, thousands of websites were dropped from their page rank or dropped from the search engine altogether. The blackout came at a time when the search engine was preparing for its future IPO and some on Wall Street speculated that the websites were dropped as a cost savings method......

I have seen some of my customers completely drop-off Google after having top 5 listing for over 2 years.....

cooper -> RE: Changes on Google (12/3/2003 14:12:13)

My page rank is still a 5 out of 10, but I dropped from 11th to 21st when searching for "FrontPage web templates."

What I can't figure out is the site with the #1 postion has a page rank of 0 out of 10 and the domain listed is a ".com", but the domain redirects to a ".net"?

My hits have also dropped DRAMATICALLY. I don't know if it is the time of year or not, but MSN sent me more search engine traffic last week than Google did...

garry -> RE: Changes on Google (12/3/2003 19:42:08)

I gave up optimising my site for Google over 8 months ago......I started to do as I pleased. [;)] (Much to wifes disappointment)

I put a few more graphics back on, tidied it up etc etc and all of the sudden made it to about #39 for the main singular keyword (I had always hovered between 41-50) for over a year , no matter what I tried.

I have always had Google adwords (I was the first in my category)(Ah the good old days)

But as of the other week I am now not on the first 12 pages for that singular keyword! [8|]
But have seen weird & wonderful things happen over the years with Google.+++++THank goodness for Adwords++++

I top the lists for lots of my other keywords with a "buy" or "Painted" etc etc as well as the plural (keyword with an S)

Maybe it is time to come in fresh with a new domain & see what happens as I seem to get all my clients into the top of the page.

There are some good articles on this at Search Engine watch and here

powersitedesign -> RE: Changes on Google (12/9/2003 1:07:46)

haha. You guys have me scared now. I have been reading this post for two days now and nervously checking client links in Google, but nothing has really dropped yet or moved dramatically in regional searches.

Any idea when the big "move" will end and things will get back to normal?

Reflect -> RE: Changes on Google (12/9/2003 11:31:12)

Returning to semi normal a few days ago.

Brian
