FrontPage 2003 - 11/17/2003 15:47:10
I ran a quick search and noticed there was not much specifically about FrontPage 2003.

So here is a thread for people to discuss what they experience with it, as well as questions/answers about the new FrontPage.

First off, for those who do not know about FrontPage 2003, here is a brief overview from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/office/frontpage/prodinfo/overview.mspx

For a description of the enhancements from previous versions: http://www.microsoft.com/office/frontpage/prodinfo/compare.mspx

One question to start:
Optimized HTML
Generate clean HTML code in files and folders either on your local Web site or when you publish pages to your remote Web site. Reduce the size of a page by removing empty tags, white space, redundant tags, unused and empty style definitions, and even certain tags that you specify.
- Is this legit? Have they finally made something that competes with the code generated from Dreamweaver?

The widely spread controversy between FrontPage and Dreamweaver grows and grows. I do believe the biggest set back from FrontPage is the poor coding that it generates for you. Although this is not the problem for those who hand code, but many of the newbs need the generator, but won't look professional when they decide to show their source code.

How much better is FrontPage 2003's code compared to that of Dreamweaver?

------------
Has Microsoft implemented the ability to treat PHP pages similar to those of HTML?

I would also be interested in Spooky's (or anyone else's) reply to this one.

I recently just finished a trial version of Dreamweaver MX 2004 and was amazed. I absolutely loved it, especially how well it handled my CSS sites. (In Dreamweaver 4, they're a mess.) I would have gone out and bought it immediately but there's that hefty Macromedia price tag...

The last time I used FrontPage, it was 99 or 2000 when FP 2000 was brand new. I remember I liked it overall but ended up giving it away. I didn't care much for how much it messed up code and the problems that kept cropping up when I tried to publish my site.

So far I am pretty happy with FP2003 it has a lot of the features that I like in Dreamweaver.

Is the code clean. What do you like about it that would be of interest to FrontPage users? I've never tried Dreamweaver so don't know how they compare.

What about the blasted Border-collapse. Is that gone, or at least gives you an option of whether it will appear or not.

What about the built-in checkers for compliance, ect?

thanks,

gail

Hi

For anyone that has a copy (mine's in the post apparently) is there any support for PHP?

Cheers
Andy

php, php2, php3 php4, php5, php6

Also, double clicking on an image in the images folder brings up Photoshop. I did not configure that.

That's not configured in my installation of 2002.

And what about CSS support, both text and positioning?

FP has had code issues before. I'm not convinced they were significant, but they were obvious. I have not seen anything in 2003 that I would expect purists to have a problem with.

The publishing interface is the thing that I think lots of folks will like. It looks and works like FTP and has the ability to use FP Server Extensions, FTP, WebDAV, or File System.

I have not tried working with absolute positioning. I will take a look at that tomorrow.

Anything more on absolute positioning? I remember using it was a big no no in 2002.

Thanks, rfh

I like the whole program in general, but I especially like the way that they handle Layers now. Really cool.
