What do you think? - 7/27/2001 20:20:00
The radio station I work for is offering web space to advertisers. Businesses, county fairs, etc.. I get the pleasure of trying out different design elements when putting these pages together. I usually have a completely open slate to work with.

On this latest page I was given a flyer with some basic information and some poorly scanned pictures. They only want to advertise their gift boxes. http://www.kwpnfm.com/bandbbakery/
There were no suggestions at all as to how they wanted it to look. I took advantage of the oportunity to play with more graphical elements, but still keep it simple.

Does it display ok. There is one machine here at work that shows some white space where the table holds the pieces together until you scroll down past it and then back up to that location. Then somehow it fills itself in.

Here are a few other examples of what I've been working on.

I know they all have plenty of flaws. For the fairs I usually only recieve a schedule of events to work from. And I usually get it about a week before the event so not much time for me to fuss over the details.

I guess what I really want to know is are these ok? Am I doing something I should avoid doing? Some of the pages actually show up on some searches, but they are intended to be found through our main site only so there aren't any meta tags etc.

Thanks for your input.

Rich

I'm surely no expert, but on my machine at the office (IE5), they load and look great to me.....

It's great that the station is willing to do this for your community... and good to hear you're having fun doing these! They're looking good.

I know this is from earlier this summer, but since next year it will probably be updated and used again I'll still throw in my two cents worth.

On Old Settlers, the schedules would be easier to read if you use spacing consistently and bold the event or category title. You have some spacing, but not between each of the events.

On Wisner Livestock, if you could get photos of each of the winners it would be fun to have their names linked to a jpg file. Also of interest would be rules for entries for next year, if you have the time and if the rules are available.

B&B Bakery - you might try a small dark drop shadow right next to the text and then add another that's much softer (lighter in color and blurred) that's larger like the current shadow on it. Not sure how that'll look, but right now that shadow seems too strong for the text. The page text needs punctuation in many places... otherwise, great page.

Not bothering with metas is understandable since these are being done for free, but make sure you use good titles. Google really likes titles. For Old Settlers, maybe something like "Old Settlers Days in North Bend, Nebraska".

IMHO, you should have a small KWPN logo and link on each of these sites. Unless you really want to go to the trouble of trying to keep search engines off them, use them to your advantage instead.

Thanks for the input Linda.

The B&B is actually a spec page that just got sold today 8^). The text was right off their flyer and will get re-worked now along with some of the graphics now that it's sold.

The Old Settlers sugestions is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I haven't come across a good formula for formating these schedules to my liking yet, but you've sparked some great ideas. I was lucky enough to get that schedule in a text format and only spent about 30 minutes on the whole site.
