I looked at some "top" competitive sites and found many have a PR lower than mine or that google does not rank the site. However these sites rank better than mine for main keywords also some hardly have any keyword density on the page! Can anyone clear my mind on how this works because i was under the impression that a higher PR means higher rankings in the searches? Has google gone mad or am I making a mistake somewhere? Yes and no. It is only one piece for Google's ranking. PR4 is OK, not trying to be a negative, but that is the minimum PR for Google to show you as a back link.
