am I ready? - 7/31/2001 19:07:00
I am new to the web design industry, and I've just finished designing my business site(geared toward small business site design for those on a restricted budget.) I would love some critiques!http://www.mydog8it.com Thanks. ------------------ mydog8it.com SunState Consulting

Hello Joy,Love the logo! Lets play a game. Let's say Im a potential client who knows next to nothing about websites. In order- 1) I go to your website 2) I dont have the flash plugin 3) Im too lazy to go download it. 4) Im too dumb to scroll and find any other navigation. 5) I go somewhere else. Try to never rely on plugins or even java for your site to function. I realize you can scroll down and find more navigation but you'd be surprised how few will, or even know to do it. Other than that I think the site looks nice. Im sure you'll get tons comments. I just really thought you should do something with your initial navigation. Anyway Good luck with it! LOL - That's exactly what I did a while ago. Now I've gone back and scrolled down to enter the real site.Joy - you've developed a really nice site, why have the "splash/flash" page to block people? I was really impressed - good job! You have put in a lot of effort, don't add a roadblock.

Wow. I had no idea that would be such a problem. I love this forum. When I submitted the site to search engines, I submitted the www.mydog8it.com/web_design.htm page rather than just the index.htm page. I also figured that the crawling engines would not index the home page (at least not with a significant rank) because it doesn't contain text. So, I assumed that the only way anyone would ever see that page was if I gave them the URL... I appreciate what you're saying about having the roadblock though. I hate to just trash the page because I think it turned out pretty cool - do you think maybe moving the navigation to the top of the page rather than the bottom would solve that problem, or do you guys think I should just trash the page entirely? Thanks for the input. The more the merrier...

I hate to tell you to trash something you worked so hard on - but ask yourself the question, "Does this page add anything to my site? Does it contain any information that a visitor might want/need? A lot of us get caught in the trap of developing sites to "entertain" (and there is a place for "entertainment sites" and we all enjoy surfing those sites - and developing them also), but the "mission/purpose" of your site is to sell web site development, not to entertain. I would make a link to that page as an example of what you can do for a client wanting/needing an entertainment site. Show off what you canj do, but don't allow it to turn away clients. Let us know what you decide & good luck... ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Indecision may or may not be my problem"

Hi Joy.There is just too much competition out there to have any roadblocks at all, in my opinion. Out of curiosity, I did a search on Google for web designers...737,000 listings. Stupid or lazy potential clients aren't even the issue. If viewers aren't happy with your site in 10 seconds or less, they will be gone, looking for one that does please them. I almost forgot what I was going to tell you. On the hosting page, your text is running into the black area. 800x600 NN 4.7 And you might want to look at the order of your text links at the bottom of the pages. It would be more consistent with your side nav to have contact last. There is a world of difference between this site and the ones you first showed us. Good job, lady. Hello Joy,I really like the logo. One comment about size. I use an 800X600 screen resolution. When I look at the main pages I cannot see the whole menu bar at the left. Even though there are no further choices, it gives the illusion that there are. So the user unnecessarily navigates there. When developing for public view I try to test the following: 1. All resolutions (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, and even up to 1600x1200) 2. IE and Netscape, as many versions as I can 3. If possible test number 2 on macs as well. That isn't all but a good portion of it. Sorry I know you didn't ask for all that. You did a good job using the primary colors (white, red, black). Thank you, Sandy It's amazing how much I've learned from everyone here. So it sounds like I need to dump the swish page and shrink everything else a little. Is 800x600 still the majority setting? I'm using 1152x864, and when I shrink everything small enough to look good at 800x600 it's so small at higher resolutions that it's hard to read. I'm guessing that it's better to opt for smaller than too big from what everyone's been saying... Also, when I view the page at 800x600 or smaller, my logo looks "scratchy." Is that just me, or are you guys seeing it kinda wierd, too? I think I may have already asked this, but what do you think about sites that give the "choose your experience" option to view the regular or flash version of the site? Pretty much the same roadblock thing? Thank you all again. ------------------ mydog8it.com SunState Consulting

Joy. I'm afraid I have to agree concerning the intro. Also the navigation at the bottom is horizontal in IE, but stacks up vertically in Opera, sort of strange. You do nice work, I had a look at your portfolio. Dave ************************************** Bartender, set up a round of Opera for everyone.

hmmm. That is strange about the navigation. I took a look at it and it's set to horizontal...anyone know what the problem might be?Just an FYI: I shrank everything a bit - I think it does display better that way. Thanks. As for the intro...Gil, after thinking about it, I guess the only reason it's there it to provide a link to the doghouse section. Sadly, probably 80% of the people coming to my site are looking for dog info, not web site info. (I'm OK with that ) I guess I'm going to have to figure out a better way to provide that link. I'll post when I have something new up there. In the meantime, thanks! ------------------ mydog8it.com SunState Consulting
