Lost In Google... - 11/23/2003 23:17:03
:)Hi Everyone
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me WHAT the HELL is going on with Google??
I thought at first that maybe I was being penalized or something, because my site went from page 2 in google to page ??? (I can NOT find it, although if I type in the URL it shows up just fine, so I know it's at least still listed), but I've discovered that the same thing is happening to a lot of sites, just this past week. My traffic has dropped dramatically, and so have sales, because of this. Needless to say, I've gotten a little panicky. Some have said that things will return to normal by monday or tuesday, although I don't know how they can be so assured of that-most people just don't know what's going on or when (if) things will ever return to the way they were, or if we'll even get our SEPR back. If anyone can shed a little light on this, I would very much appreciate it.
Thank you-
Chyna

I get a regular email from a Search Engine Optimization guru and in the latest email received towards the end of last week the first item was "what's up at Google".

She said that the algorithm appears to have been changed. She is an SEO expert making a living from SEO and admits she does not have a clue what they have done. She advised clients to sit tight. Strange stuff has happened to her sites also. She also noted good sites dropping out but "spam" sites that should have been ditched still ranking.

It appears that even those who know about these things don't themselves know !!!

I've had some Google changes before but never THIS radical. We went from #2 in 'st. louis real estate' and about a dozen related searches and now I can't even find us out by going through the pages (stopped at page 7 or so.)

But I've only been watching Google about a year (maybe 18 months). Has anyone see this sort of thing happen before? Any guess as to how long this might take to iron out? Our web traffic has been cut by 30-40% (and therefore business leads are dropping too.)

It's good to know we're not alone in this dilemma, but oh, my goodness!! When you do the search I mention, most of the results aren't even realtors - what a mess! Does Google know how upset we all are? And do they care? I'm still hanging in, but welcome any suggestions as to some strategies to overcome this.

Someone offered me money to get them from No2 to No1, so I was going to do it on a "no-win no-fee" basis.

Guess what, the recent changes at Google have moved him up to No 1.

Rather pleasing as the rival company that was at No 1 has stuffed their pages with his trade name that was also his domain name. Well done Google .Might be the only good outcome on the planet going by other comments though :)

Not so pleasing I don't get to make anything. :)

If you check any city
denver real estate, kansas city real estate, omaha real estate etc. etc.
You will find no relevant results just a bunch of national sites like yourcity.areaguiide.com NOT a single local site. I have no idea what is going on. I hope they make changes soon this is crazy.

I have heard all sorts of stories of weird results on google searches that now go to porn sites with no relevance whatsoever

Shirley,

The same thing happened to us. We were #1 on Goohle for the past 7 years and now don't even show up---this is a financial disaster as we get 50% of our business from Christmas sales. Does anyone out there know what is going on?

We're also missing from most other places that we were No 1, I really feel bad for you as I know the feeling. What can be done???????

Well, I don't know about everyone else, but Google is driving me crazy-my site is at #1-3 on some keywords, not farther than 13-17 on others, and still can't be found on the keywords where I was originally at #17 and #3. So....what I'm doing is concentrating more on Yahoo, Msn and AOL, just let Google do its crazy thing and quit worrying so much about it. I guess it's working, because sales are picking up big time, even without a whole lot of help from google. Anyway, just a thought, hope it helps.

In the last update, google changed it's algorythm, it applied a new spam filter.

The new spam filter seems to look at things like keywords in backward link text, keywords in H1, H2, etc tags, alt=text, and other places and methods that webmasters use to use keywords to increase the ranks in search engines.

It also seems that google is not targeting all keywords with this spam filter. Competative, popular keyword search terms are the ones affected by the change.

Here is a list of some of the terms affected by the new algorythm:
http://www.scroogle.org/hitlist.html

To, me...this was a poor update. Since the update I have found that google is producing far less relevant results, and Im finding a lot of sites using classic spam in the top positions. (hidden text, doorway pages, etc.)

I think this is a response to webmasters who do things like buy keyword rich links on sites with high PR, cross-link an army of sites using keyword links, and cram keywords into Header tag and alt tags.

Unfortunatly... this has hurt a lot of innocent websites, as well. People who have a keyword in their domain name are being penalized, because their backlinks contain keywords.

I hope they change this soon...or I will be using a new search engine for my daily searching needs.

Interesting...very interesting! Have you seen this article? - http://www.searchengineguide.com/lloyd/2003/1125_bl1.html

Having read the articles above and speaking with various SEO folks, I hear two messages: (1) hang tight, or (2) be prepared for more changes.

So which way do we go? I was planning some changes anyway, so I'll get to it and hope that it works!!

Shirley - your websites are great - I especially enjoyed your cat site. :)
