Adding .ram extensions for Real Player - 11/26/2003 15:43:06
I have a 5 minute recording in an mp3 file on my website. For dial-up users, it takes over an hour to load. I checked with RealOne about their .ram extension which loads very quickly and they sent me these instructions. Point your web page links to a .ram file instead of the mp3 file. The .ram file is just a text file with .ram as the extension. Inside the .ram file place this line: http://webservername/pathtoyourfile/filename.mp3 It should opent the realplayer and stream. I think I know how to change the file extension to .ram but How do I place the line into the .ram file. Thank you

Hi nac Streaming audio isn't easy but here's how to do what you asked:- Open Notepad, or any simple text editor, and enter the location of your mp3. Now when you save it, instead of putting .txt at the end, replace it with .ram. Thats your playlist made. Upload that to your webserver, make a link to it on a page (<a href="yousong.ram">Chyoon</a>) adn publish it, that should work

Thanks so much for your help. It worked just fine. However, now I am running into the following situation. This is a 5 minute recording. On a cable modem, the file loads and plays just fine. However, on a dial-up, the sound breaks up. I noticed on another website that they had a 3.5 minute recording using a .ram file and it works fine on both cable and dial up. Is there anything I can do at my end to avoid the sound breaking up on a dial up or does it have something to do with the bandwidth from my web hosting company. If so, what kind of bandwidth would I need to correct this? Thanks again for all your help.

Its the length of track rather than the modem type. You could try getting more bandwith for it. Normally a web provider with unlimited works, but it should work on the lower bandwith priorities. Try re-encoding the mp3 into a lower bitrate. The standard mp3 is 128 to 256 kbps play rate, try knocking it down to 64kbps for dial ups.
