Brent,

I am by no means good at this stuff. Your site puts to shame anything I could do and I really like it, but......what about some graphics on the Home page? Show some generators, batteries UPS systems in a collage or display of some type. And more color would help grab attention. Here's a neat article on color symbolism and how to target your audience.

http://webdesign.about.com/library/weekly/aa070400a.htm?once=true&IAM=MSStart

I really like the site, Brent. You've worked hard and it shows. I'm anxious to see what others have to say.

Dave

Thanks for you input Dave.
I tried to keep the colors simple, maybee I kept it too simple? As for the graphics on the homepage, I was afraid of a slow page load with the animated gif, however I have an extreemely fast conection and can only speculate how long page load in at 56k. The company wants to be carefull of who they endorse, so choosing products to display is a challenge, I will see if I can come up with some general immages.
I found that my feedbask form is not working. I do most of my work in page view, and dont know much html, so if anyone can tell me what to change i will give it a shot otherwise i will just redo the page.

Nice fast site - but I think you really need to put a site navigation menu either at the top each page or running down the side - the set of links at the bottom really isn't enough.

" Our customers give us nothing but problems"

EEEK! That sort of sounds like you don't like your customers !!!

Maybe if you reworded that to something like "Our customers come to us with problems ....."

Hope this helps :-)

Thanks, do you think I should replace the links at the bottom with a side or top menue or just add another navigatioal option?
Yes, I agree with the impression ("Our customers give us nothing but problems"), is a bad one. The president of the company came up with it, and it's obviouse he is an engineer, not a marketing expert. I will see if I can talk him into changing it.

Gorilla,
Since I'm just learning I found it interesting that you suggested a third navigation reference. I'm wondering why that might be necessary? Thanks for the help.

The posting quoted above surprised me somewhat as I had only seen the text links at the bottom of the page when I visited the site using opera 5.12.

So I went back and had a second look this time using both opera 5.12 and Internet explorer 5.5.

Your top navigation menu did not appear in opera.

Using internet explorer 5.5 it did appear on your start page but nowhere else.

I was intrigued. So I doublechecked that opera was configrured to run javascript. Still no joy.

Exited cleared cache completely for both browsers and this time turned off my firewall. This is NOT something I'd ordinarily do. The top nav menu now appeared on all pages in internet explorer 5.5 (Looks very good btw) No joy in opera.

I went to netcraft.com the result I got back from a query on your url is between the lines of = signs:

====================
We could not get any results for your selected site. There can be a several reasons for this:

The host name you have selected is not valid, perhaps it was mistyped.

We could not contact it, and we do not have any cached information for it.
This can be because there is no server running on that site yet, or because
it is a new site and the DNS has not yet propagated to Netcraft.
It can be also be because of a temporary routing problem from Netcraft to the site.

We cannot tell you anything about this server, and have ignored it.

====================

I'm stumped. Other than to say that not all javascript is cross browser compatible. ( I know that menu sytem sold here is compatible with opera. ) I haven't had the time to check your menu's code but it's the likeliest culprit. Expecially as zonealarm didn't like it.

What you do about this is up to you. Have you tested it in Netscape for example? (I Didn't have time sorry) Does your server have frontpage extensions installed?

And is it worth it? Check your server stats and see how many visitors are runnning which browser. But it's not that difficult to do cross browser js. So my reply is yes it probably is worth it even if you have to put re-doing it "on the long finger" for a week or two.

I wish I had time to go through the script myself but time is a bit short at present. Hopefully one of the gurus here will be able to give you a further pointer or two.

So to finish;

Your two sets of navigation links are more than adequate to my eye anyway. But only in internet explorer 5.5.

There's some problem with the dropdown menu. I think this is well worth investigating as more and more people now surf behind a firewall and or set their browsers to disallow scripts.

Sorry i can't be more specific.

kind regards,

Mark

thanks for all you imput. It is a new site and the url may not be out there yet. Does anyone else have the same veiw in IE 5.5 where the drop down menue only works on the home page? I quess i will look more seriosly into a more compatable menue, can anyone recomend a menue that i can customize and possibly put in as an include page? Everyone here seems to rant about vinces menues, and I havent checked them out yet.
P.S. for me the menue worked in netscape, outside the expected netscape issues.

Hi Brent,

Yup. Just took a peek using IE5. Dropdowns only worked on homepage and for that matter, only visible on homepage. Bottom navbar seemed okay everywhere however.

Other than that, site looks good, but I agree with the other comments about some color...seemed a bit drab.

Very cool header though with the lightning bolt blazing away....

Thanks, it is a menue from http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/topnavbar.htm It seems very easy for a novice like me to cutomize, but i cant figure out a way to get it to be any place but the top. (like the example of vinces menue as shown here in outfront, or like many sites that have the menue below the name or graphic) This menue seem to work ok in EI and Netscape, but from what i can tell getting dhtml or javascript to work in opera is beyon my skills and would be woth the price to get something like vinces menue that claims to be compatable with more than the one I am using currently.

Vinces menus are superb and very cross browser compatible. They're also very very very reasonably priced and you'll get great help here when you ask about them.

This is strange. I'm running ie5.5.4 and the drop down menus seem to appear on all pages for me.

Thanks Mark for the checking this out. Thought maybe I was confused on the navigation suggestions.

Hi Paula and Brent,

Yes, the menus are working for me today as well... using IE5. Could swear they didn't the other day. Maybe a corrective change or two has been made. Or perhaps I was mistaken. No matter.

Would still recommend heeding Gorilla's advice...or even better, send him a banana or two.

Gorilla greetings to Paula and Brent ! - you're very welcome

Of course I thoroughly approve of Bill's suggestion about the bananas - better yet just send me the keys to a banana plantation And if you happen to know any Orang Utans who'd like to go on holiday with me (I've always had this thing about redheads ....)

LOL OK that was fun now down to business:

Now this is seriously strange menu now works fine in ie5.5 - pages with images are *very* slow 'though.

No joy in opera alas - opera is much less forgiving than IE. So is netscape btw. This is an indication of things to come as Microsoft have stated repeatedly that later versions of IE will be far more compliant with w3c standards (read less forgiving) than current versions.

It's not my firewall btw as the menu showed up fine with it on.

Had a quick decko at the code and I can't see anything glaringly obvious so I'm still stumped - some weird server glitch? A propogation delay? Anyway it seems to work now. Netcraft still can't find it 'though. Brent I'd keep a very wary eye on things for a while if I were in your shoes .

Final point actually I liked the colour schem e you used - I thought it was nicely understated. if you do decide to change colours another member here posted alink to this site:

http://www.colorschemer.com/online/

it's great for co-ordinating colour schemes.

kind regards,

Mark

Hi, Brent.

Overall, the site is nice and clean, but I'm getting a side-to-side scroll at 800x600.

I would recommend working with tables to keep your text from spreading across the whole screen, making it a little hard to read. It would polish up the looks of the site, too.

You could stand to use a few more graphics to keep people's attention and to break up the text.

I like the looks of the drop down menu, but it doesn't seem to work consistently. Right now I'm on the battery page and it is not dropping down.

Best wishes,
Sandy

As of 18:05 hours UK time August 16th it's stopped working for me in internet explorer it shows on the home page but only on others if I refresh. I'd junk it if i were you there's some seriously buggy code in there somewhere and it's a pity to let something like that mess up such a nice site. I'd buy the menu from here it's at a great price and it works.

Thanks Everyone,

Your input is greatly appreciated, I am leaning to work more with tables and plan on placing the main body of the site in a cell as to have more control over its width. I do want it to expand however for larger views. I think it is tacky when a site is built for 800X600 and stays that way in any view. As for the graphics, I must be honest I havent been able to figue out much in adobe photshop 6.0, so I kinda go easy on them. that is the look this company wants and that was fine with me. I either need to scrap the coplex photo editor for one I can use or hit the books.
One quick question, I want to download the site from the server back to my hard drive, I have been editing the site live and want to have a back up copy that is current. My server is set up with the frontpage extensions, But that is one obticale I havent hurdled yet. Any links or tutorials would be great.

Hi Brent,

I heartily recommend you stop by this site:
http://www.outfront.net/articles/tables1.htm
I believe it will answer any questions or notions you might have about table usage.

Hello everyone,

That navigation was built by Mike Hall. It was really the first of its kind when it came out. I believe he has built a more compatible one. I think that one was built in 1998 before the boom in dhtml.

Anyway at the bottom of your page you content disclaimer is pointing to file:///C:/My%20Documents/My%20Webs10/content_disclaimer.htm

In other words, your hard drive.

Looks good!

To publish back to your hard drive:

1. Open the site live.
2. File > Publish
3. The url will look something like, file:///C:/My Documents/My Webs/yoursitename
4. OK.

Everyone has their own way of doing things, but I find it feels more secure to me to make my changes on my hard drive then publish to my server.
