How To Open/Edit .TAR File in FP 2003? - 12/1/2003 15:31:54
Hello, Only had FP Beta which just expired, waiting for full version delivery from Amazon.com (got it for $159/no tax - incl. mail-in rebate), so no today-rush on this question, but welcome input. __________ I'm slowly moving into learning CSS - namely by using a freeware WYSIWYG editor - and also wanting to use form templates I sometimes find online to save time. But like my last form find (a guest book), it's downloaded as a .tar - zipped or not. I may find other goodies in the future, so I'd better learn how to open and edit such files in FP 03. Maybe weird or ignorant question, maybe not. Either way, help/wisdom appreciated.

Thanks for referral. Damn, do I feel like a dummy... I thought a .tar was some CSS or CGI thing. My ZIp Genius (top notch freeware zip/unzipper and more) did unpack everything in the .tar, and then... I saw the .cgi I was looking for in there. Live and learn, eh? :) _________________________ Now, so as to not clog up the board with a short thread and you appear to be a head wizard here, another FP 03 Q:... "FP, Please Stop Auto-Updating My Site, OK?" Situation: Usually when I fired up FP and then chose to "Publish Website," I naturally go through secure user/pass login and then get the local and remote view of files. and I'd go ahead and drag over whatever file I wanted to upload. However, for the last few times I used FP before "beta shutdown" - and seemingly after I checked the clean-uo-white-spaces-in-HTML -- FP automatically compares pages and then uploads any/everything changed. Nice for certain situations, but now what I want as default. FP Help isn't the best in my view, and I wouldn't know how to define this problem, so... Q: Could you/someone tell me a) What I may have inadvertently set or unset that causes this -- and b) Solution to toggle or option this feature - and where in FP. -------------- Thanks

When you see the window that shows the files to publish, don't click the publish button. "Do File > Publish Site" again. That brings up a Publish Web dialog. Click the Optimize HTML tab. Make sure nothing is checked there. Click the Publishing tab. Make sure "Publish changed pages only" is selected. t

Thomas, Thanks for info. Problem did seem to start when I started using Optimize HTML. The only thing I checked was to Remove White Space - a good thing, considering FP code is already kind of screwy at times, yes/no? -- Q: Would having ONLY this checked cause this problem -- telling FP to auto-upload instead of just check for white spaces - however I choose to upload? Again, I can't access FP 03 right now to test this since Beta is bye-bye and am waiting for delivery of full retail. Just getting ready for when I install the real deal and fire it up. Thanks. Philip

I wish I had put this thread in OutFront News today. I will put it in for next week. It would not surprize me if that is the cause, but I don't feel comfortable telling you that for a fact. Maybe others have had that kind of problem? t

Thanks for reply, pardon delay of mine (having server or Outlook Express problems and didn't get all my emails when I should have. Anyway, FP came in today and I of course almost immediately installed it - LOL - and have checked off/set as you have suggested. Will have to see how FP behaves after a few boots/prog launches before reporting back. Hasta la.

Well, I'm back. So far, so good: -- Unchecking all HTML optimization and so forth as suggested here is making my FP behave as I wish (no auto upload). And/however then... How really useful/effective is FP's HTML Optimization? Gimmick or efficient? Pro comments welcomed. __________ BTW, someone told me that Microsoft had bought out Macromedia = therefore owns Dreamweaver. So this so-called "competition" between these two apps seems a tad unreal, yes? One reviewer of FP 03 said that it had shamelessly borrowed from Dreamweaver. How interesting, yes? ;) Though if buyout is true, not surprising. And someone also said that eventually either FP or DW will disappear off the marked. I wonder which one.... But then maybe wrong: GM has "competing" Chevies, Buicks, and Saturns, too. (N'ver mind the above, I'm just rambling here - LOL)

Looks like I'm jabbering all to myself here, but had to amend what I sad: >>> FP STILL updates automatically upon first firing up "Publish Site" even with all suggested tweaks. So back to square one. Or maybe the non-auto update was a Beta fluke. But that doesn't seem logical: One SHOULD have the option to upload what one wants when one wants. Kind of like turning off Auto-Save in MS Word. Or maybe I'm pointlessly howling at the moon here. A bit like my avatar.... :) Ciao.
