When retrieving permissions, server unexpectedly closes... - 12/12/2003 11:29:11
I am having a problem when I try to retrieve permissions for my web. The web is located on an NT server on my network. When I open the web to modify it, I log onto the NT server using the Administrator login. When I go to the Tools->Server->Permissions... option, FrontPage spins for about 1-2 minutes, and then comes back with the dreaded "The server has unexpectedly closed the connection" error. Another user at a different location in our company can use this functionality just fine from his computer, so I'm guessing it has something to do with my local configuration. Does anyone have ANY ideas as to what can be causing this??? TIA!!!

the dreaded "The server has unexpectedly closed the connection" error. Wildman, This is a (real) shot in the dark since, by your description, you are on an intranet: if possible, disable your firewall and try again.

This problem was introduced with FrontPage 2000 and does not affect FrontPage 98. The newer versions of the FrontPage client use DLLs that are provided with Internet Explorer. For best results and to correct this problem you should install the latest version of Internet Explorer. If you upgraded your operating system from Windows 95/98 to Windows NT/2000/XP then you will need to reinstall Internet Explorer in order to get the proper DLLs. If reinstalling the browser does not correct your problem then there is a good chance that your proxy server is causing the problem. To read more about this problem please review the following article from Microsoft, Q265044. User Comments Why do I keep getting the error "Server Connection Timed Out" or "The server has unexpectedly closed the connection"? Actually I had this problem and it drove me mad, regardless of the version of ie I had. The answer I found (Microcsoft help were useless) was to delete the Web contents folders in Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/.. So WEB FOLDERS etc etc. Frontpage then asks to be re-installed. After this it went straight through and worked. I did email Microsoft this information. this info from: http://www.pageinabox.com/support/kb/question.php?qstId=10

Yes - we're both logged in as administrator. The main difference between me and him is that he's at the same site as the webserver is, therefore his computer is on the same subnet as the webserver. I'm not sure that has anything to do with it though. I'm kinda new at the server side stuff, so which logs should I check for information??? Thanks for all your help!!! Happy Holidays!

Okay, somewhere in IIS, (can't remember, and can't test), is an option to allow a certain IP address to access sites. I only had to set it once and it was a few years ago... then the stations were able to edit "server based" websites. The server logs can be found in Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Event Viewer FP logs are found by doing a search for wecerr.txt, at the server The information above may be a little rusty, like I said it's been a few years since I used NT/IIS...
