My Latest CSS Endeavor - 12/21/2003 12:48:07
This page was originally designed with the pictures in a table. I have spent I have no idea HOW many hours getting this to work using CSS and having the nice little "hints" showing up at the bottom...not only that but getting it to look decent in NN4. I've succeeded in getting it to look good , however....

I'm very frustrated right now. WHen I had the divs with the pictures spread out more, I had nice little "hints" come up underneath in the white area when you hovered your mouse over the text. When I made the divs smaller and closer together, as they are now, several of my hints have disappeared. They work better in Mozilla than they do in IE....but they don't work right in mozilla either.

http://www.design-a-website.com/chapin/index.htm

None of the other pages on the site have been converted to CSS yet.

It DID look good in NN4. I don't know WHAT happened to it. It's supposed to ignore the one style sheet, and follow the style sheet I made for Netscape 4 browsers!! UGh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now it looks like it went thru a food processor!!!!!!!

WAAAAAAAAAA:):):):):):):):):)

Peppergal, did you do the @import right? I think one of the gorillas posted soemthing about the @import in here. I'm so swamped right now with baking or I would look for it for you. Also do a search on the @import. Mine didn't work at first either. I forget though right now what I did to get it to work. It is all in the cascade though. Think about this as you set it up.

RE: My Latest CSS Endeavor - 12/21/2003 22:46:23
This is how I did the @import, in the head of my index page:

<LINK REL="stylesheet" TYPE="text/css" HREF="netscape_ss.css">

<style type="text/css" media="all"> @import url(chapinsite.css);</style>
</head>

Both CSS sheets validate, as does the HTML (4.01 transitional).

I don't grasp what happened. It WAS working FINE....I spent over an HOUR messing with the Netscape stylesheet getting the divs all lined up and everything looking the way it should, I kept testing the view in the browser and it was looking good. So I left that alone and did some tweaking on the regular css sheet. Then it all fell apart. All I did was make some divs smaller and closer together and I lost most of my <span> hints </span> (none of the hints show up in IE, and only three or four of the six show up in mozilla)

I've posted on the css forum too but haven't heard from anyone. I've tried using quotes instead of the url(stylesheet.css); and it make no difference. I'm very upset because it WAS working beautifully and I don't know what went wrong. The maddening thing is everything validates, so it's not a forgotten tag or ; or " " mark or something. :)

btw...I did find that post of Gorilla's, it was the first thing I searched for, and I thought I did it the way I was told!

Hmmm, I'm not sure what to tell you. Someone at the css forum will be along. Sometimes it takes a few before you get an answer over there, but they are usually good. Someone could be testing your css, if you loaded it for them to look at.

If your sure that all your t's are crossed and i's are dotted, then I'm not sure what to tell you. You have your linked and you have it in the head.

Another thing, and I found this out with my card page that I did. Maybe the doctype that you are using doesn't support the @import. I was using the javascript and went to xhtml transitional and my page fell apart. When I went back to the html doctype the page behaved.

I know that this might be a tad more work, but try going xhtml transitional. It should not be too hard to get your page validated for this. (Rember, the validator is your FRIEND, lol:)) I think that the problem could lie within this.

I guess the most significant change about that is ending my tags with this: <blahblahblah />

right? do I close all of my html tags like that?

oooo, me aching head............I think I need something stronger than coffee this morning! LOL

I hope I'm remembering this correctly, all your html empty tags get closed as such:

<img />
<br />
<br clear="all" />
make sure that all your lists have a </li> after each list item.

I'm not too sure what the rest of the things are. My head is spining right now as well. Get an xhtml book from wrox. You'll have to search a tad, but if you look in amazon.com, you'll get a good price on it.

Just remmeber that xhtml is more strict then html. And more css friendly! And use the valildator! It will guide you with your errors.

xhtml is not difficult. Just more strict. I'm shooting for strict xhtml after the holidays.

And somewhere in here a grapics course for psp8.

Now, I have to get to baking or I am up a creek without a tray to give out this year! roflol!

Merry Christmas!

You can email me privatly ifyou wish. I'm sure that I could come up with some links for you as time permits.

There's no need to close tags such as <br> and <img> They are just placeholder tags. They have an opening but no close tag.

Tell Ya Wot, I'll write the beginners guide and post the bugger for all, and send those in need personalised copies :)

If you are using the xhtml though, you do need to do this. If you don't you will fail validation, and they won't look at it as closed. Html you don't need to, but in the xhtml you do. A validation would look at this as tags not being closed in the correct order.

If you're very good you get to lick the chocolate sauce off the wooden spoon. If you're bad ... well wooden spoons have other uses ... beware the C1Sissy when irked ... She's not called "iron paw" by her trembling minions (aka the entire population of New Jersey) for nothing you know .... she's a mighty gorilla-spider hybrid which means that she's got eight arms each of them with a wooden spoon or a rolling pin .....:)
