Would love some feedback - 9/27/2001 20:45:00
Hi All

On to my second FP 2000 site now and has been a real learn as you go project, but 5 minutes after it's completed I want to start making changes - would be doing it forever.
Anyhow she's at:
www.intouchcomputing.com.au - still sorting out form problems with my host (that's how I got here), and I do know it's definitely not compatible with Netscape.
Critique away.

Thanks

Andy from Spain

Hi Trumps,

The image on the home page took an age to appear and then I was unable to click on it to enter your site - I assume there's more. I would make that home graphic smaller anyway.

Cheers
Andy

Thanks Andy

Have tested that image and average load time is 11 seconds. Just in case though I do have an automatic redirect to my contents page at around 15 seconds so not to keep slower connections hanging.
Below the picture is an image which is the enter button.
Would you suggest I actually put the word enter there some where?
Although must admit after browsing through this awesome site I have downloaded a copy of Swish to try, so goodness knows what I'll get up to now!

Not sure where/how you tested the image, but on a T1 it took over 20 seconds to load here. Since the redirect doesn't begin counting until the page is loaded that's at least 35 seconds.

The image (enter button?) is not visible unless one scrolls down, I would make sure a clearly marked "Enter" was visible to all.

Hi, Trumps -

The first page redirected before it finished loading. Didn't seem to overly slow to me, but could use some improving. I'd suggest having the middle graphic off to the left and adding some text content. This will give the viewer something to read while the page is loading and it'd become search engine friendly. The titles of the pages need to be updated also (the part that's shown at the top of the browser window). Check www.searchengines.com for more info.

Some tips:

Use tables for layout, but don't drag the edges of tables or cells - that'll mess up the math and mess them up in NN. Change their properties instead.

Instead of using FP's dynamic animation (or many of FP's "features"), there are often easy to use scripts that will be compatible to NN and quicker to load. If you want to go with FP's stuff, that's OK (but hover buttons are NEVER ok) ...just be aware that they may not work in NN.

Don't use the space bar or CSS for positioning. Keep to using tables for your layouts.

The contents page is just one more step before we get to some real info. I'd go with either this page or the index page, but not both. With whichever one, I'd still add some text content. Contents page mouseovers... check www.outfront.net/FAQ.htm for a good javascript for making mouseovers. Works dandy! If you want to give it a try, have the buttons stay the same, but on mouseover have a graphic appear above them that tells what they'll find on that page. There's also a javascript that'll give plain text on mouseover -- that'd be the best, but I'd have to dig for it. If you're interested, check www.javascripts.com or http://javascript.internet.com -- let us know if you need help finding it. ...that's just extra stuff, though. As I said, you can do it FP's way, but at some time you'll probably want to use some javascripts.

Now I've arrived at the inner site. Personally, I think I'd skip both the intro pages and start directly with this. I almost missed the links on the spinning floppies. You might consider linking the words next to them also.

Will you be putting some info in that blank table near the top? It looks like it's missing something.

You're off to a good start. Have fun with Swish... it's an awesome program!

Linda

Thanks Gil and Linda

Great feedback - sometimes you get so wrapped up and proud to what you've accomplished you forget to step away and cast a critical eye.
Have only just started using tables so will make that a standard - Linda, the "empty table" is actually an image which seems to take a while to load by the looks of it - all round from the feedback so far I need to learn to manipulate my images better.
I agree - the 2 entry pages do seem almost out of place with the rest of the site, I guess I wanted to copy the fact that everyone seems to have some fancy lead in page these days.
Once again thanks all for your feedback - head down bum up and back to work.
