I'd like some suggestions/advice, etc on an "in process" web design site I'm creating to promote my web design business....

Hi, Dan -

I'd get rid of the top line of buttons and only use a side nav here. For the side buttons, consider using a blank gif with a rollover button and the selected page button having the logo's swirl on it. ...whatever you do, make some original buttons.

On the portfolio, try "work in progress" instead of "unfinished".

IMHO the contract info and the links within the page could be scrapped on the pricing page.

"Where to Start" ...this is the stuff I normally sort out for my clients. Saves them AND me time. If you have a certain registrar and host that you prefer using, perhaps state that. www.godaddy.com is only $8.95/yr for domains. www.thehostfactory.com www.datapipe.com www.appliedi.net and www.digihost.com all offer reseller accounts. You may want to look into that.

Hello Dan,

By the way, thanks for the critique on my latest site creation...it is greatly appreciated...and the 'white space' you referred to happened because the site is set to a fixed width for 800x600 resolution. Anything above 800x600 will experience the white space to the right.

LB provided some excellent advice for your 'Where to Start' page. There are a lot of hosting / reselling programs out there.

I would recommend this route because if you are going to be providing web design services, you will want the web host to support the tools that you use.

It won't do you much good to have the customer sign up with a Unix based host that doesn't support FP / ASP, if FP / ASP are the tools you use.

I personally resell for www.Readyhosting.com because they not only offer all the Microsoft goodies that I need, but the price range allows me to make a decent profit just from reselling. Also, I can offer a full package to customers (web hosting, development, maintenance, email, etc.).

In my experience, most customers don't want to bother with these types of issues because they may not have the technical knowledge on which to base their decisions. Also, they are more concerned with the final product, not the path it took to get there.

Just something to consider...best of luck.

I'd go back and redo the screenshots on your portfolio page......sorry!
You can do wonders with Flash, now give your images a crisp fresh look.......this site is the first impression that people get of you.

Thanks all for the comments and feedback...I am making changes to the site based on your suggestions....Superconductor, thanks for the ideas about readyhosting, I've been using doteasy for a few sites and have had good experiences with them so I may just stick with them...Also, I appreciate what was said about not giving the customer too much freedom in selecting the host, I will likely reconsider my philosophy on that....Anyway, I'm glad I stumbled upon this forum a week or so ago, what a great place to learn, grow, and relate to other like-minded people

by the way....I'm still not sure on my pricing, whether I should publish it or not, or maybe give a real general range with a comment about "each site is unique and pricing is based on the individual site needs", etc or something to that effect....what would you suggest about this?

Hi Dan,

Im assuming you dont intend to stay on a host that throws banner at ya.

I would definitely work on a those buttons. Maybe give them some color and remove the top ones like Linda mentioned. A search function is always nice but in this case, Im not sure what they would be searching for. Everything seems to be where they can find it. I would remove that.

Dan,

I can't say that there is a best way to show pricing or if you want to show it at all.

Personally, I give a 'starting' price per page (static and ASP - that includes a minimum number of items per page), an hourly rate for database development and for images, etc.

However, there are so many variables that come with each web site to develop, that I just can't see placing a hard figure to the customer. I just show them enough to give a rough estimate. When they provide the details, I can give them a more concise estimate.

Again...just my take on it.

Dan,

Looking much better. Be sure to keep your fonts consistent (Name, size, and bold) across all of your pages.

The top right navigation that you have may be better utilized at the bottom of each page. It just seems redundant at the top. (Since you have the same navigation on the left)

On the hover for your links, don't change the font size / bold...just change the color...seems to be easier on the eyes.

Also, you may want to try to get the navigation images to line up more evenly with each 'dot'.

Big, big improvement.
