Website Re-Construction #391 (...well, nearly) - 10/19/2001 20:18:00
Hi guys,

I can't stop fiddling. I have started to re-configure my http://www.hawkesbay.com website yet again.

The previous version (You can see the old style of the site by following other links, such as: http://www.hawkesbay.com/napier_history.htm )
was based on an outfront template, and it worked quite well in most regards. EXCEPT it look totally screwy in Netscape6, so I figures a change was in order - and I wanted to try something adventureous. So far I have only changed three of the pages. They are:

http://www.hawkesbay.com/ (the home page)
http://www.hawkesbay.com/travel.htm
http://www.hawkesbay.com/places.htm

These pages are heavy on the CSS thing (the home page doesn't even use table!), but you will need to have a browser that supports CSS to view the page in all it's glory.

I have tried it our in Netscape 6 (beautiful), IE6 (great), and Opera 5 (dodgy... fonts look wierd... why is that?), and Netscape 4.08 (doesn't format at all, but it's interesting to see the raw structure, which I believe is what the search engines will see... so they should jump straight into the meaty stuff).

I am not really using FrontPage to "design: the new pages, but I am using FP to edit and hold the pages. I am finding I need to spend more time in HTML mode that I have ever done before, and I must say it's quite a good place to work on pages one you get used to it. And I'm using the FP preview to check up on how any changes look.

If a few of you could check the three pages above, and let me know how it looks in your browser (please also let me know browser and version) I would be most grateful. I have had a bit of trouble with the tables in the http://www.hawkesbay.com/travel.htm page, so I am particuly interested in how that is sitting.

I look forward to receiving your feedback!

Best regards,
Murray Potts

Hi Murray,

I'm a bit rushed (lunch on the table) but the site looks great in IE6 and I prefer it to the orginal - good use of white space and colours.

Best of luck with it.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Murray,

Awesome...pretty darned awesome. Using IE5.5

Color is good, but got a slight sense of starkness. Maybe more pictures? Dunno.

Nice job though. Sounds like you're up to your neck in it now.

Cheers

IE 5.5, 1024x768

Site looks great! Home page especially.
On the travel page there was a lot of white space to the right (but not on the home page)...and the font at the top is different than the font in the table below...

Other than that, very nice!

keep it up

dan

Looks nice, except personally I don't like the double spacing of all the text. It doesn't allow the separate sections of text to have a set off appearance from the other sections. Hope that makes sense. Just looks like one really long page with no real separation. The travel page has a major side to side scroll in MSIE 5.5. I don't get the meaning of the eye. Eyeballs kinda creep me out anyway.

EWD,

The eye is very significant. It's my eye! But it's just there, sort of temporary. I am trying to get a grip on the technical side first before I add more color and stuff (point taken, Bill). But I sort of like the limited color effect. Anyway, it's just a phase... and no sooner will I get this new look straightened out and I will probably feel compelled to set off in a new direction. It's a personal website, so I have no restraints!

Yes I see (dan) I still have a problem on the travel page... can't work it out...

And thanks Andy (I know you have a soft spot for orange and grey)!

Best regards,
Murray
