Opinions? - 10/19/2001 20:02:00
This is a site I am nearly finished - meta tags to go and a few pages not yet sorted.

My client had another web designer take a look at the site and she came back with some nice things to say but a lot of critical comment. She made a very big deal of my use of percentages for the tables and insisted that this was poor practice, made a mess of the site and that fixed width tables should be used. She particularly commented that it looks odd at 1600X1200 - it probably does but I think a fixed width table would look a bit stuck in the corner at that resolution! Opinions? On this or anything else?

Hi Katherine,

Just curious...why did the client have someone else take a look at the site? Were they unhappy with it? The site is brilliant.

You've got to be kidding about the criticism. Your site design is fabulous just the way it is. And based upon what I know about the quality of your other sites I've seen, the internal coding of the site just has to be solid as well.

Beautiful job, lass

Hi Katherine,

Seems like they have to find something to criticize - unwarranted in this case, I think you're dead right to go with percentages - fixed width table at 590 pixels maybe? - that would really look a mess. Just checked my stats for resolution, well under 1 per cent at 1600x1200 - I think they're clutching at straws there just to sound knowledgable.

As for the site, I think it looks great, there's a lot more to it than I first realised and could be the only problem, navigation's clear enough but could be a problem for some users for knowing exactly where they are in the site.

The home button gives a wrong link by the way to here http://www.irelandescorted.com/Default.htm

Anyway like I said I think you've done a superb job and wouldn't bother too much about the resolution issue.

Cheers
Andy

The site is beautiful. Just a few minor details to clean up.

When I click home from the accomodation page, the sample itineraries page I get Not Found The requested URL /Default.htm was not found on this server.

Some of the hotels open in a new window some don't taking me totally away from the site

When I go tips>shopping and click the tips in the top right to get back to tips it takes me to the main page.
I would like to see a sub menu on each tips page.

Don't have time to look at the whole site. Again the design is great. Love the colors and layout. Just check your navigation.

Thanks folks. I reacted a bit badly to that critisism. Silly of me, your comments are reassuring.

You are right about the navigation - it needs work, this site sort of outgrew it's original navigation and I need to make some changes to take account of that.

Hi Katherine,

I'm looking at the site at 1024 x 768, and it looks friggin' brilliant. I find it "odd" that someone would "complain" about a site not looking "right" at 1600 x 1200... it's hardly mainstream! My great challenge always seems to be getting thing looking "right" at 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768. When someone with 640 x 480 comments about sideways scroll I feed them a link on where to buy a new computer. If someone with 1600 x 1200 res complained to me I'd probably ask them to book me into a suite at the Waldof Astoria for a month or two while I considered their key point.

Best regards,
Murray

ROFL - thanks for that!! You are so right. I should have realised that if that was the best critical point she could make I was alrighty!!

I tried setting my resolution to 1600 x 1200 and my machine laughed at me.

Hi Katherine,
It's a beautiful site. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Fix up the things ya'll have been talking about and it will be perfect IMHO!

I like it. I use the liquid approach a lot too. The only concession I sometimes make to larger screens is to split the text into side by side columns, only because from a readability perspective it's too hard to read all the way across without a break.

Depends on the client, depends on the site.

Glad to see you include the search box above the fold, so to speak. Lots of people ask me to move it to the bottom, not really understanding that if people want to search, they have to be able to find the button.

Katherine,
this is a wonderful site. Really stupid comments on the other designer's part. Since you taught me to use fluid tables on this forum I can't imagine doing it any other way.

Using 1152xsomething on my computer and I think it looks wonderful. I love the photo rollovers, and the expanding tables look fine.

I was curious about how many people actually use resolutions of 1600x1200 so I took a look at some of my sites' stats...roughly 1.5% of visitors used resolutions equal to or greater than 1280x1024. The stats didn't even single out anything greater than that. So what, maybe, 10 people in 10,000 might use that rediculous setting? (I don't even think the resolution scroll bar on my computer goes up that high!) She was certainly digging for negative things to say.

Great work abbeyvet. Your client is probably like some you already dealt with whislt you were in vet pratice...
Perhaps I should get you to do my site!!! Very quick loading - great. (Off topic but do you believe the site I showed the other day would be better with some fluid table to take in text? You said at the time that it looked good the way it was.

Thank you Keith, and to all who commented on this site - I made some changes based on what you said: Created a sub navigation for the tips section, split some of the pages into a two column format. It's a big improvement so thank you.

To your site Keith - I really really think it is great as it is, I do not think the particular template you have would suit a fluid design, fixed width designs stll very much have a place in my opinion, I use them a fair bit, it really depends on the look you are going for. Personally I would stay with what you have, it's a terrific look.

Abbeyvet,

I've been checking your site often and think it's magnificent.

If I could add anything, it would be to make the images on the home page (under 'A Dream Irish Vacation) links - the same as the 'More' link. I find that I am in the habit of clicking on images, such as these, in thinking that they will take me to the pertinent page.

The site looks really great. I was looking at a few of the pages and I believe I spotted spelling errors on the 'Driving in Ireland' page.

"penelties for exceding" should be "penalties for exceeding"

(My observation is based upon the spelling used in the U.S. - - I'm uncertain if there is a variation of spelling for these words. If so please ignore.)

I was taking a much needed "mental break" here at work and went back out to your site because I found it interesting to read.

I wasn't intending to look for errors but another spelling(yikes!)caught my eye that I thought you'd want to know about. On the Linen, Lace page I saw this: "Irish crotched lace". I assume that is crocheted lace??

Hope that's helpful. I enjoyed reading about Ireland.

Kim

Hi Katherine,

I just had a chuckle over this last post, and decided to re-visit the site. You know, overall it is quite possibly the best website I've seen. It definitely sets the tone, the reason for the site, piques one's interest, and provides all of the information very concisely. The graphics are wonderful, the navigation simple, and I never had that "lost" feeling as I rambled through the site.

Just thought I'd join the others in giving you the praise you deserve for a truly excellent site.

Sorry that I am late to this party but I have to agree with the post here. It is a beautiful site! Well thought out and I love the monochrome look it has with the surprise rollover on the left...

Bravo and well done!
