I'm taking a logo design course.

My first assignment is relatively easy, in fact a breeze. I have my idea.

I have sketched how I want the things to look and have scanned them in, but am not thrilled with the scaning.

I have found a few gifs online, but they aren't exactly what I want.

How do I get these into the pc so that they look decent? I have tried to play with psp to get them to look good, but don't like how they look. If I sketched them with pencil first and then traced them with a pen, would this give me a more decent looking thing?

Thanks in advance for any help. Or any program suggestions. I do have corel drawl, but am totally not familar with how to work it.

Hiya Mom

Email the images to my hotmail address and I'll play with them when I get home. What you need to do is use PSP to enhance the lines and despeckle the image. This should make the outline clearer and remove any muck thats on the scanner from the image.

I'll see what I can do with the images at home tonight, if you email them to me that is, right back tot do some work at college[&:]

Logo design should be done in Vector format. Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Macromedia Freehand and Flash are vector programs.

PSP, Photoshop (there are some vector tools in PS7,8), fireworks produce raster (bitmap) graphics.

Vector formats include .eps, .ai, .wma...etc
Raster formats include .jpg, .gif, .tif....etc

Now to your question ;) :

You could scan your sketches and then use a tracing program such as Adobe Streamline, or the tracing function in Flash or Illustrator.

This would convert your raster image into a vector image. Vector images are based on points and lines...there are no "pixels". You can resize a vector file to the size of a billboard, and it still maintains the same quality.

With your sketches converted to lines and points, you could edit and tweak them very easily. Also, most "clip-art's" native file format is vector. Which makes for easy editing after you learn the drawing tools in a vector program.

Hi toni, I didn't get to use the design that I wished to but did submit my feeble first attempt. The instructor was very kind and said that I did a good job[;)]

I have the apitek drawing tablet, however I don't have the drawing programs. I have corel 8 draw, but can't seem to work it out! As with other aspects of web design I know I still have much to learn.

Hi peppergal,
What is the difference between Vector and Rastor? I know that I have read this before, and can't seem to pull this out of my head.

Is the Vector more workable, and more useable for web? This is the one that is more editable in node form?

I know that vectors are easier to resize, and stuff....there are probably thousands of things in PSP that I've not even scratched the surface on. I do know that you can work with vectors, as there are options to "create as vector" or "create new vector layer". When you add text, it's a vector, and you have to convert it to raster before you add drop shadows and effects...

I really don't know. You'd best go to the PSP Users group I sent you a while back; those guys are to PSP what these guys here are to Front Page. They're passionate about PSP and have a great knowledge of the program. I just think their board format stinks. LOL

Hi Toni, thanks for the link on the vectors.

Mike reminded me that the logos need to be reproduced, which is something that I knew, but forgot about with my first design. I doubt that mine would be able to be shrunk and used, lol. Found a neat font, but it doesn't appear to be able to be resized and keep its look.

I took a look at your portfolio, nice job, they all look great.

To be honest, I don't know much about creating vector images.

Thank you kindly, Peppergal, for thinking of me! [:)]With all the time I previously spent around here for the last couple of years, I better explain.

I'm still around but not as much as I used to be. Mostly lurking.

Ceating my own digital photography site captured my heart and I spend a lot, and I mean a lot, of time developing it and the newsletter. It incorporates everything I love: web design, photography, writing, editing, research, education, helping others as well as learning from them. Also, I recently purchased an advanced digital camera which rekindled my interest in photography beyond snapshooting. I spend a lot of time in digital photo forums...and taking photos. [:)]

As a aside, it seems my web design skill level is just about right for the type of simple sites I currently create. If I have a question, I still ask. Also, there are plenty of folk here who have a lot to offer and, primarily because my interests have changed, I don't feel there is much I can offer Outfront at this time.

I'm only an email away however.

If memory serves me right, Karen is right on this, they also allow for easier image placing. But also make working with layers harder, raster images make that easier. I use vectors for simple images and raster for complex, seems to work better for me

LOL. supposed to be for a bar, jumping jax, trendy etc... The font is an exercising font, the trampline, exercise, and of course the drink glasses. Others chose to use the jacks from the game, but I could not find a decent one that was not in the clipart.com site.

I guess unless you read the specs and know what they are asking (or trying to ask) of you, then you don't understand, which means that the logo did not get across any kind of message![&o]

re: fireworks
btw fireworks uses vector and /or bitmaps and can export to a number of formats including ai (adobe illsutrator - vector format)

in and of itself it's no good for printing, but you can use it to make vector based logos and then place them in freehand / illustrator, or even import it as a shape into photoshop (thus retaining it's ability to be resized at will without loss of quality)
