any one got any ideas ??? - 1/15/2004 20:01:43
i have posted this on another area of this forum, and recevied zero response, any one have an idea I have recently upgraded to 2003 from 2002. I also switched from DSL to satellite connection. the issue is i cannot ftp to ftp sites using FP03. They are not sites i have previously used http publishing protocol, and have no FP extns required (hence the use of FTP within FP) and so i have not broken any server extns. i use the publish command ** i can however use http using FP, on those sites i use the extns on without any issues ** i state that point as i was concerned that using a satellite connection - the latency would be an issue, it appears not to be. i can see all ftp sites and move files using a dos shell, and cuteftp.....but not using FP2003....my reasoning now, is that i have an issue with the software, that i am unable to solve....... i think the use of port 21 exclusively may be my issue.... i use windoze2000pro. any ideas ?? Janie

Well, since you sound desperate, I'll offer this -- foggy as it may be. I had the same issue moving to ADSL. The solution lay in a browser setting, I think either under HTTP settings or Intranet settings in the security panel. Automatic logon only in intranet zone, maybe? It was something totally counter-intuitive but that is all I remember :(

If you can connect to the problem site with http, yet not ftp, then the protocol is being blocked by something. Are there any firwalls involved In Internet Explorer ry to put the trouble sites in the "trusted zone" it's late, I'll try to work on it some more tomorrow. What satellite serice?

hmmmm i have been, my request is to be able to do this via fp03 as i have been able to do so, its a large site, and changes frequently. im thinking maybe i should migrate to other software, but i need to eliminate whether its a FP issue or the satellite - which i think i have determined that its not, as i am able to upload, download, move files etc via other protocols. perhaps im having a really blond moment, who knows, except im not blond ! janie

hmmm maybe i havent made my self clear....... i can use the http publishing for the sites i have with fp extns. i do not ftp to those sites. i also have sites that i do not use http protocols, and for those i use fp03 publishing option via ftp the http sites work. i do not publish to these sites using anything other than http the ftp ones do not. i do not publish to those sites using anything other than ftp these sites were working 100% prior to upgrading to fp03 and sat connection. fp uses port 21 exclusively to publish via ftp, and i still feel that this is my issue ?? is this clearer ? i dont want to add confusion to this sorry mess

Ringadingding, the penny has dropped, check the used ports on the computer, if memory serves me right, sat net connections use port 21 to connect, move fp to another port, and then try, not easy to do, someone is bound to know

my reasoning now, is that i have an issue with the software, that i am unable to solve....... i think the use of port 21 exclusively may be my issue this sounds like it. Maybe the Microsoft implementation of FTP, or the FTP server on Win2003? What happens if you try the Frontpage FTP publishing to a site that has the Frontpage extensions enabled. I would test that on a test site or server since I have had problems with it in the past. From the server side... Looks like MS Win2003 server has 2 FTP services that need to be started... quote:
Verify That the Default FTP Publishing Service Is Started Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. expand Server_Name, and then expand FTP Sites. Right-click the default FTP site. Verify that it is started. If it is not started, click Start. Additionally, verify that the Default FTP Publishing Service is started. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. In the Computer Management dialog box, expand Services and Applications. Click Services, and then in the right panel, verify that FTP Publishing Service is listed as Started in the Status column. If the service is not started, select it, and then click Start in the upper-left link. Or, click Restart
