CSS: TRUE WYSIWYG Viewing and/or External Editor? - 1/17/2004 2:26:43
Having come to webauthoring from a graphics design background, that's one of the main reasons I chose FP 03. Having to get into CSS due to involved MySQL/PHP script for my new domain, and frustrated with FP or perhaps simply the general not-as-WYSIWYG way of working with CSS.

Seems you have to go tag by tag by tag, be it embedded or externally linked and no way to see results right away it seems. Due to this piece by piece by piece modality, I end up losing my concentration and give up. I like to work with a page's design full viewable (i.e. Preview-ed).

Q-1: Is there anything within FP that would offer the same Design, Split, Preview type of thing as with HTML? I'm aware CSS is a whole different animal, but there must be an easier, more intuitive, design friendly way?

Q-2: What would be the simplest way to get as close to such a way in FP if I'm missing the boat or not getting this right?

If such easier modality in FP is not available:

Q-3: Is there an affordable (under USD $70) truly WYSIWYG CSS editor that would Preview as FP does with HTML with a file such as index.php of my MySGL script's database (the latter being all CSS driven by one or more Style.css files)?

Now, I downloaded DHE, which is a nicely made freeware WYSIWYG CSS/DHTML program, but you can't just open up or copy/paste in a .css into it and "Preview" code as it should look -- and you have to save it in their program native .dhe format. Same goes for opening a .css file. Has to be .dhe.

In short, it seems like one has to export .css files from whatever editors to a browser to view the tag you just tweaked, then go back into editor, tweak code, export, tweak, export, etc. A real hassle.

And I may also be totaly off my rocker here, but I'm just learning to get into CSS, so forgive my probable ignorance on this WYSIWYG matter.

Thanks.

Hi soniclight

Have you checked out Westcivs stylemaster?

I only use it to play with stylesheets right now. I use homsite for my hand coding. Stylemaster to play with and get used to. I'm not sure if this is really what you are looking for or not. they have a trial one that you can download, and also have bundled courses for css along with the editor that you can purchase together.

I'm not exactly sure though how to answer the rest of what you are asking. I'm sure that someone with more experience will be able to help you out though.

WESTCIV HERE

Thanks for reply. Downloading it right now.

Also still welcome any CSS savvy/experienced FP 03 native responses to this conundrum. And to continue, I could even add:

Q:-4: Any way to open .php files in FP that show more than just code?

Still craving that WYSIWYG thing for everything.
Gotta have my WYSIWYG :)

ThankU

My personal opnion is that they are good, but you need to know the coding before you use them. I"m sure that I could have learned fp well enough by now to start doing some work, that is when I would find the work:). But, I need to know how to do the coding first. If something breaks in the design due to the editor that you are using, do you know how to fix it?

Have you ever taken a page that fp has done and tried to validate it? It would be interesting to see what the results of a wysiwyg validation would be. Just remember the meaning of the wysiwyg:)

There are many great tutorials out there online for free as well as in a good pricing area. I have done a few at a very low cost and tons of free ones.
