Where does a database go - 1/19/2004 10:06:22
I have ASP.net, PF2003, host made a SQL database at a different numbered spot, I installed Northwind to practice but only see the 3 pages for edit etcetera when I open my web in FP. What do I do now?

Your host should be able to provide you with the interface for managing your database. If your host is on a local network you can use Microsoft's Enterprise Manager to manage your tables.

If the DB is already on the server and the Admin has set up an DSN, it should be accesable / visible using the Tools menu under Web Options:Database.

If the SQL Server and the IIS server are 2 different servers, then the Admins MUST set up a DSN from the IIS server (AFAIK anyways...:)).

Can you explain more? You stated what tools you have; can you tell us what you've tried? Do you have the web setup yet? Have you tried using the DWR to see if anything is configured yet? Have you checked any of the tutorials here?

???:)

Thanks for replying. I checked tutorials but -- or I just dodn't understand - how to get going. There is a separate server for SQL and I was given the address and username and password. I don't know what DWR is. I can find the Northwind db when I edit my site with FP and it is on my site in a folder fbdb - is it supposed to be there or on the SQL server. The northwind db is in access. Do I need to construct everything in access because I though SQL was different. I need something to study. Any suggestion? Sorry for being so newby

Youll need to create a connection to the database with the credentials supplied by the host.
For a frontpage connection, thats tools > web settings > database

Will you use Frontpage to display the asp page or will you code your own database pages?

Note - the northwind database you are probably talking about, is an access database.
To access the SQL database, you may also need Enterprise Manager

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/trial/default.asp

Just install the client tools, not the server, on your PC.
Again, a bit of a learning curve, but check to see what your host also recommends.
