text links?? - 10/24/2001 13:43:00
Hi.........

I was told by a web designer that a way achieve a big differencs in spidering and ranking in many search engines is to have text link at the bottom of the page.

I have noticed that a lot of sites DO have a string of text links on the bottom of their pages ie: Contact Us, FAQ's, ordering information, links, site map and of course, a wide number of other site specific topics.

Can anyone tell me if there is a good basis for this? And if so, [1] are there certain topics or subject areas that would be most appropriate to help enhance your web position? [2] Should this be done on "all" your pages? [I have over 250 in my site!]

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Normal text links down at the bottom of your page won't do much for search engines rankings per se, but any text links will help in bringing the search engines "into" your site. They also help to bring more viewers into your site also... even though you have graphic links, you should definitely have some text links, too.

A nav bar with text links is often used at the top or bottom of pages to help viewers navigate the site. Consistency is great in navigation, so yes, it would be best to have this on all pages. A quick way to do this would be to apply a shared bottom border... this info will be shown on all the pages, unless you exclude some individual pages if needed.

If you re-do the site someday, it would be good to take advantage of includes. Check back here for more on that if you reach that point.

A good place to add in text links for both search engines and viewers is the first section of text on your home page. Link "Candy Making" and "Cake Decorating" and possibly add in a few other keywords to link. Consider adding more content to this section and left-aligning it instead of the centered alignment. ...just try it to see how it looks.
