flashlight -> anyone know about end user passwords? (2/3/2001 16:27:00)

This might be a server question. I am not sure.

I am at a brick wall in publishing my company's website. When I go to publish, I constantly get prompted and reprompted for an end user password(permission?).

I am not sure what to login under,

I am not sure what password it wants,

I am not sure if this can be handled by NT User Rights.

I am on a IIS Server 4.0 and FP2000. Any help would be greatly appreciated since my progress is on hold until I can figure this out.

Well, you do need a username and password to publish. Your hosting company should be able to provide you with them.

Or am I not understanding your question?

It sounds like a permissions problem, common with NT machines. Could you describe your publish process with a little more detail? Are you using FP Publish or FTP?

The procedure I execute goes as follows:

Open Web
Publish Web
Type ftp:// IP address
Select - Publish all pages, overwritng any already on the destination.
Select - Include Subwebs.
Publish
**then it asks me for

This operation requires end-user permission for ftp:// ____________

Name ______
Password ______

**********************

I am published at the moment on ftp. I want to publish through FP because I look at is as an option to get the Server Extensions working. The Server Extensions are installed, but they do not function. I am troubleshooting and I need to find the solution. The Server Extensions are a valuble facet of our website, and its full operation is imperative. Thank you for your time and concern.

If you don't have a username and password, that's your answer right there, the very first reply to your post.

You should not normally be publishing to ftp:// you should be publishing to http://www.yourdomain.com

You STILL need a username and password provided by your host. Please contact them.

FP2K will not let me publish with to http://www.tsgcom.com. It tells me that "It could not find a web server at www.tsgcom.com.

What's the deal with the server's name. How do I find out my server's name? I have several names for it.

Thank you for your time and concern.

From here it (http://www.tsgcom.com/) does not have the front page extensions installed or they are installed incorrextly.

Sorry - a server can only have one name, unless you count the ones "used in vain"!

Hi,

How do I properly install the FP Extensions?

I am the host of my website, how do I find out my own End-User Password?

Correction: my server has one name.

Yo REALLY NEED to contact your host. They need to install the extensions, they need to give you your user name and password. I really don't know how to be any clearer with my advice.

Bri I don't think you quite understand my situation.

The thing is... is that WE ARE the host.

The network guys here did nothing but get the IIS Server hooked up and running. That was their main obejctive "get in running".

They know nothing about 'end-user passwords' and that really aggrivates me.

Believe me Bri, if I could call up a host and ask them the password, I would. But calling myself up would do no good whatsoever.

I wanted this thing to get up, six months ago.

Is there anything in the server, that I can look in, to find out the end-user passwords?

Control Panel?
A Database?

Please help me.

We?

OK, that was step one. Now they need to configure it and set users for each "Web"

IIS help files? Get the MS IIS Adminstrators Book? Hire a IIS Admin?

Sorry, that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yes, as in, TSG. We host our own. The owner doesn't really like to pay for services if he can have it for himself.

How do you configure? How do I set the users up for the web?

Q1.)

Q3.)

A1.) Checked them. Nothing to be found.
A2.) Have it, there is nothing on end-user passwords.
A3.) I am the IIS Admin. I spoke to my boss about hiring someone and he wants me to 'learn by experience'. So obviously that is not an option.

Thanks for the advice Gil.
Please let me know if you can think of anything else to try. I am game for anything.

puiwaihin -> RE: anyone know about end user passwords? (6/21/2001 18:52:00)

Ok, you need to open up your server and go to your Administrative Tools. Then open up IIS. Look for a folder called "Inetpub". Then find "wwwroot". This is the folder which should contain all websites on your server.

If you want to add yourself to all websites, you can alter the permissions on the wwwroot folder. Otherwise, find the site you are trying to publish to.

When you find the folder you want, right click on it and select "Properties". Go to the "Permissions" tab. You need to modify the permissions. You'll need to add a new account and give it a password. Then you can use that account and that password to publish.

But you will also need to make sure that the Frontpage extensions are installed on the folder you are publishing to. In IIS console, right click on the folder and look at "Tasks" This is where you can install and remove the Frontpage extensions.

I suggest starting here http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/frontpage/wpp/serk/ovwhatar.htm and follow these instruction step by step.

And here is step by step information on publishing to a server...

Yes, I have that book. It has nothing in it about End-User Passwords.

Well, I'm at a loss.

I don't understand what you mean.

I just tried to publish the site from FP2K again. It asked me for my end-user name password to publish to my ftp://address.

I put permissions on the file itself, hoping that in some crazy way that might give me a login and etc. It did not.

Rian, it will take me awhile to check up on what you said. But I will get back to you.

Even though I haven't really gotten anywhere, I really appreciate what you guys have done for me.

puiwaihin -> RE: anyone know about end user passwords? (6/22/2001 16:15:00)

If you have the Frontpage extensions installed, you should not be publishing to ftp:/anything
You should be using FP's http://servername
or even http://ipaddress

When you put permissions on the folder, did you give yourself All rights? If you just put read rights on it you won't be able to publish. You can also give yourself special rights to Read and Write.

Indicates there are no FP server extensions installed on the server.
