Unix Hosting vs. NT - 2/4/2001 23:20:00
When one is trying to make the decision of hosting with Unix versus NT I was wondering what the influencing factors are? So far (with Digihost), I've been selecting the NT option but wonder if I'm doing myself/my customers a disservice?

I think the basic guide is that unless you are using databases and asp on your site there is no reason to use NT hosting.

There are some things that you cannot do with FP when you use NT. One is set seperate permissions for subwebs.

Digihost have a good page on the pros and cons of each here: http://www.digihost.com/support/unix_vs_nt/unix_vs_nt.htm

Like Katherine says- Unless you are using ASP I see no reason to use NT. As for databases, access is so slow and limited anyway - mySQL on Unix is the only way to go for DB drive sites *IMHO*

I offer NT and Unix hosting and only have one client on the NT plan, and that's only because his shopping cart is NT only. We wrestle with permissions all the time.

None of my Unix/Apache clients has had ANY problems with the FP extensions, and we just started offering ChiliSoft ASP on Unix. The jury is still out, so we shall see, but so far I see no reason to go NT that is compelling. With most hosts, Unix/Apache hosting is less expensive.

Apparently, you've had your site on NT and don't sound unhappy about it. Do you have many problems with extensions? Do you use FP discussion webs or subwebs? Maybe my host is the problem.

I had my site on a Unix server for 3 years. I had - maybe - 3 easily solved problems in all that time. Moved to NT because we have to use ASP, and the site has not operated correctly for more than 1 or 2 days out of each month. BIG problem with permissions. BIGGER problems with extensions - they become corrupt every couple of days and my host can't explain why. They just reinstall, then I spend a day and a half testing forms and discussion subwebs. They fix one problem and something else breaks down, over and over and over. IT thinks I'M the problem and I'm ready to pull my hair out of my head.

I don't seem to be having many problems on NT. Used a guestbook for the first time recently and struggled with that. Use forms with send mail and other "bot" that seem to work okay for me on NT.

I have used subwebs and don't have any problems to report. I can't control permissions myself, however.

Carol I think it is safe to say that NT hosting will always cause more problems BUT I also think your host is to blame here.

I have only two NT sites but, other than not being able to set permissions my self which is not a problem really, just a fact, I have had no problems at all with extensions or anything else. I am with the same host as Nancy - www.digihost.com

All the above said...

I am on an NT box. I am using a MsSQL7 Database with loads of ASP code. My banner manager is ASP. I am ASPed to the gills. I have many submit forms. Yet I am concerned long run about staying on the NT box for all the above reasons. How smooth is the transition of moving from an NT box to a UNIX box with FP Extensions and Chilisoft? Would it be a nightmare of redoing all my coding and late night pulling hair out of my head, or is it just uploading to the new box and that's it (or something in betweeen)? Would LOVE to hear from someone with this experience.

hzarabet,

No experience "moving from NT to Unix", but chillisoft on apache is not a big improvement over NT. To gain a real improvement you'd need to move to Perl or PHP. ASP is very fuctional, but is does put a load on the server - PHP runs outside the kernael and uses almost no resources - that's where you gain. If you are going to continue to use ASP, I'd say stay on NT...
Just my humble opinion

I trust your opinion and the THOUGHT of rewriting everything over to php is making me sick.

I guess I have my answer.
