FP Extensions - 2/13/2001 15:08:00
As opposed to what Henny Youngman might say...I'm sure you've heard this one before, but please don't stop me! I'm trying to get search capabilities and form submission enabled in a FrontPage intranet web. I've installed FP extensions (or at least I think I have!) but to no avail. My environment: Our FrontPage 2000 intranet web is published to an NT Server (v2.0) running IIS v4.0. Our public website is also hosted by/published to this server. I have read that our particular set-up is problematic, especially for someone not versed in Microsoft's Managment Console. I am not sure if IIS is even recognizing the intranet web, although it is viewable by select employees as it currently resides. Is there a set of steps published somewhere for one to follow while attempting to enable extensions/search/form submission, or can someone give me configuration tips/checks? I'm also open to having a consultant look into this problem I am having if anyone knows of a reputable person/firm in the metro-Boston area. Many thanks!

you have two seperate webs to deal with here the fact that one is an internet (open to the public) and the other is an intranet (not open to the public and viewable by the company only)doesn't make a difference the configuation for both are the same.

after installing the server extensions on the server they need to be configured for each web. you would do this by right clicking on the web in iis, choose tasks then configure server extensions. this needs to be done for each web; the inter and intranet.

after you've configured the extensions you'll notice that if you right click on a web and choose properties there will be a tab called server extensions, and a button for configuration for how to send e-mail. you'll need to enter the proper settings for you forms to work if you're looking at having the results sent by e-mail.

hope this helps.

When I right click on either the intra or internet web i do not get "tasks" as an option - just open, open in new window, print target, copy shortcut, add to favorites, and properties (which has only a General tab). Does this mean my server extentions are installed improperly? Under Admin tools there is a Server Extensions Administrator, but on the surface that doesn't look like it helps me. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

You need to right click on a web IN the MMC, there you'll get the windows Storm was talking about.

OK! I made it to the right place using Internet Service Manager. When I right click on the intranet web I get the "All Tasks" option - then "Configure Extensions". After configuring the extensions, and clicking the Apply or finish button I get this message:

"The document root of the web server where you are trying to install the server extensions already contains a disk-based web".

The internet web has it's server extensions already configured - I guess by one of my predecessors. When right clicking on that internet web, then All Tasks, I get other options than "configure". Would the fact that the internet & intranet web are in the same tree cause this problem? That is, internet path=c:\www2\web5, while intranet path=c:\www2\itguide. Does itguide need to be published in a different root directory?

absolutely. seperate the the two into two entirely different web sites. you'll love yourself for it in the long run.

this way manageablity and security won't be as problematic.

I followed this thread with interest, because I am in a similar position.

First I discovered that one cannot place a web server and InetPub in a common path to the drive root -- not if you need to have FrontPage Extensions work correctly.

Then I found out that the same applies to multiple web servers.

Because I started with two FP-generated webs they apparently carry with them the evidence of this history.

I am trying to set the two webs up as
D:\web1\myweb1 and D:\web2\myweb2 -- and this worked OK for web1\myweb1, which looks fine in MMC.

When I use MMC to set up myweb2 there is a message about detecting a web-based server, and an invitation to delete/rename the file
D:\web2\myweb2\_vti_pvt\services.cnf.

I tried to do this a couple of ways, (including first deleting web2 out of MMC -- but retaining it on the disk) and I get a message "Error Deleting File: Cannot delete services: Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I am logged in as the Administrator, and the file permissions for _vti_pvt\services.cnf are: 'Special Access (RWXDPO)'. Are there other permissions that supervene?

What do I have to do to run myweb2 in parallel with myweb1? Is it necessary to physically remove myweb2 and its folders from the drive D:\, delete the web-related folders/files, then return the remaining files to the drive?

Thanks in advance for any pointers on this...

Jim H

I am having the same problem, but my directories are c:/inetpub/wwwroot/webA and c:/inetpub/wwwroot/webB. I thought all webs needed to be in the wwwroot directory?

When I configure extensions for webB, I get the same error message - "The document root of the web esrver where you are trying to install the server extensions already contain a disk-based web." But when I try to open the web site in front page it tells me that there are no server extensions installed. How do I fix this problem
