Publishing site always uploads files, even without chan... - 1/27/2004 12:24:51
I am starting off with Frontpage 2002 and have made a basic site. In my site I have links to some WORD and EXCEL files. The first time I published the site, I expected all my WORD and EXCEL files to be sent to the host server, which they were. HOWEVER, every time I now publish the site (let's say I changed the text on the home page) I notice that my changes are sent to the server but so are ALL the WORD and EXCEL files...even though I have not modified those. This is quite annoying as some files are large and therefore the publish process is time consuming for nothing!

My Publish options are set as follows:

Publish: Changed pages only

Changes: Determine changes by comparing source and destination webs

For the moment, the only solution I have found is to tag "DO NOT PUBLISH" on all my WORD and EXCEL files found in the site but I am sure there must be something set incorrectly that is causing this behavior.

Thanks for your help.

FP doesn't actually send all the files each time but it does do a comparison to determine if anything has changed on each one. This can be very time consuming on a large site.

The only way around it that I know of is to mark the files "do not publish".

Annoyingly, some files cannot be marked "do not publish."

I have a bunch of unoptimized jpegs that I get from my realtors for their websites. I have to store them in a folder out of the Web folder in order to keep FP from publishing it with everything else. Not THAT big of a deal, but I'd really rather have ALL of each client's files in ONE spot...under their web.

Gad,

When you brought these files across, did you perchance use "Paste Special" instead of "Paste"?

Thanks for the replies. I have since changed the PUBLISH options to "Use Source and File Timestamps" rather than "Determine changes by comparing source and destination webs" and it seems to now NOT upload all my files.

Does anyone know what Frontpage actually does to determine if things have changed when you use "Determine changes by comparing source and destination webs".

In any case, using the timestamps seems to work better and solve my problem!

According to FrontPage's Help section...

"Determine changes by comparing source and destination Webs - compares the last changed and last published dates and times of files in the local Web site, and then compares that information with the last changed dates and times of files in the remote Web site."

"Use source file timestamps to determine changes since last publish - compares only the last changed and last published dates and times of files in the local Web site."

"It is recommended that you select the first option only if you publish files to the remote Web site by using more than one computer or if other people publish files to the same remote Web site."

This doesn't directly answer your question, except that the first option was apparently meant only for those sites with multiple authors or computers. All other references I found also said you should use the second option in your case.

So much for "clear and concise" answers from Microsoft! ;)

I encountered this problem: when publishing from my local website to the remote website: a local Microsoft Excel file insisted on being uploaded and copied over the remote copy - every time I published.

As suggested, I changed my publishing options to: "use source time stamps . . . "

[An associated note: I'd love to have copied the exact language of the FrontPage dialogue box (paragraph above). But of course FrontPage editing was shut down while the dialogue box was open. Thank you Mr. Gates.]

I hasten to point out another problem recently encountered. I just flattened and shrunk some very large PDF files. I noticed that FrontPage absolutely refused to even properly report the new much smaller sizes. I had to remove the smaller PDF files from the FrontPage Website structure - and then re-copy them in.

The point here seems to be that one should be careful editing PDF files while they are resident in the FrontPage structure. I'd welcome comments on this phenomenon.

Yes, FP will not send those revised PDF files to the sever. I think it is a bug in FrontPage. I had to change the name of the file inorder for FP publish to recognize the revised PDF file.
