CMWin -> Local web on a network (2/15/2001 20:23:00)

I'm not sure is this is a server question, but here goes:

I use FP2000 using PWS.

Right now, I am the only person working on this site, but that has to change. In order for someone else to have access to the local version of the site, it would have to be moved from my C drive to the company's network (which, BTW, is Novell.)

The IT dept looked horrified when I told them this, and have no idea whether PWS will "work" over a network.

Does anyone know anything about this? There have to be companies out there with more than one person working on the web site - how do you do it?

Any help at all is greatly appreciated - I am totally server ignorant and as you can see, do not get much help from "IT."

Yeah, sure you can put PWS on the network and "share" the developing site under it. That's exactly how a lot of companies run their (small) company intranet.

So, install PWS on the network, and then publish your site to the new server.

I've never worked with a Novell network, though, so I have no idea if you can use PWS on one. I'd imagine so, though.

Thanks, Bri. I check with MS and their answer is that "PWS Personal Web Server does not support Novell Platform. It only supports Windows Platform. The connection limit is ten. The publish sources should be in the local drive and does not support network drive on the Windows 98 platform. Therefore, I suggest you use Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) with the Window NT platform."

Most of this is Greek to me.

Does this leave me the only option of making my local version a disk-based web? What are the pros and cons of that? I'm really not even sure what PWS does.

Thanks so much!

Carol
