Cannot open file "author.log" for writing - 3/2/2001 20:45:00
On my server running FP2000 extensions, I checked the "Log authoring actions" option associated with the server's entry under the Microsoft Server Extensions snap-in. I'm finding that the authoring actions of root web administrators are properly being logged in D:\Inetpub\wwwroot\_vti_log\author.log but the same actions by subweb administrators and authors are not. Instead, they are producing pairs of warnings in the Application Log under the Event Viewer: 1) Error #20002 Message: Cannot open file "author.log" for writing. 2) OS Error #13 Message: Permission denied. Why would what seems to be an internal server function require that ordinary authors have write permission? How do I fix this so that all authoring actions are logged? Wage Slave

I have a very similar problem but my error message is sever error: cannot open file "c:\my documents\original web\_vti_pvt\servoce.lck" for writing As a result I cannot save or upload any new work, I cannot find this file anywhere but recently my hard disc underwent a re format and both Frontpage and the web were reloaded onto the PC resulting in this error message..... ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT IT MAY BE?? Thanks DH

I had another look at this and realized that only those users with Change authority (i.e. Administer and Author permission) for the root web are having their activity logged in author.log. As a test, I changed author.log's File Permissions to include Change authority for a couple of my busiest subweb authors and, bingo!, their activity immediately began appearing in the log. How then do you ensure that all subweb authors have secure and FrontPage-friendly Change authority over author.log? Giving subweb authors Author permission over the root web is out of the question. Is write permission for the Everyone account the answer? Is there no FrontPage configuration setting to do the job? I'm running Rel 1.2 of the FP2000 extensions on an NT4 server. Wage Slave
