Need a new Microsoft Server--Recommend any? - 3/3/2001 13:29:00
I am currently using Microsoft Server 4.0. It keeps crashing on me and my Admin told me that the program is almost extinct. I want to know what Microsoft Server is the best to use. The newest, that the best of the best use. Thank you for your time and concern.------------------ Thank you and have a productive day, Flash Visit " TARGET=_blank>http://www.tsgcom.com

Are you asking about Hardware? or Software? If its Hardware suggest either building your own or a Dell. Software I would suggest Win2K Advanced server. Actually my first choice would be Apache on Linux or Unix, but you asked for MS.... ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality

Apache on Linux? You can run FrontPage sites on Linux and Unix? My dumb question is, How? A-and can an NT network use Linux or Unix web servers? and would that work well?

Nothing Wrong with NT Server 4.0. It is a very stable platform, it may be a few years old, but will be around for another five years at least. You say it crashes, what kind of problems are you having?Rodney

IIS 4.0 extinct? LOL Not even close. Sounds more like it (the server) is not configured properly. What is the best? Depends on who you ask - Win2K - IIS5.0 is a big improvement over IIS4. I prefer Apache/Linux myself. I'm sure you'll get votes for Solaris, AS400, etc... ------------------ Gil Harvey The Host Factory Resellers are our speciality "Is there another word for synonym?"

Apache/Linux, what's the difference between that and IIS4?Um, as for server crashes, I know that every server will crash at some point in time, but it's especailly aggrivating when trying to copy files from my authoring computer to the server. My NetworkAdmin worked on that for me. He said it was the NT Svr. and now it's working peachy keen. I am still looking a new product. ------------------ Thank you and have a productive day, Flash

NT, IISx -vs- Unix/Linux/Apache...FP runs very, very well on an Apache server. It's better than NT in my opinion because in most Apache hosting plans, you can do all your permissions, extensions and other work from a control panel. On NT it must be done by a server techie. My personal experience has been incredible stability at a reduced cost in most cases using Apache than NT. Yes, FP works VERY well on Apache servers. Go Here for more on this issue: http://1awebhosting.com/manual/chapter7.html Good luck! Thanks Phil.We are our own host. So to do this, we'd have to purchase and configure the Apache? Is it really worth it to change if we are already our own host? ------------------ Thank you and have a productive day, Flash "Only in cartoons is the world saved in 30 mins, I take 5."

You don't "purchase" Apache - it's free, like most Unix applications

I know there is varying opinions on Linus vs. MS. However, I'm running 4 servers (1 Internet and 3 Intranet) w/ NT 4.0 and IIS 4.0 and are having great results. On one box, I routinely get 300-500 hits per hour and haven't had to restart in over 4 months. It also running SQL 7.0 and is constantly being updated / changed via FP 2000. The other servers have various other S/W running as well - 1 also has SQL 7.0, another Access 97, and another serving up .PDF pages.IMO, if the server is configured properly, you should not be having these probs with your server (unless the hardware is broken or is not on the Authorized List). And I know I'll get some flack, but all my servers are Compaq's...

although mr rdouglas has had his servers running for 4 months, NT machines generally should be restarted once a week, to preserve memory stablility------------------ Stuart Steele StuWeb Productions 07808254916 http://www.stuweb.co.uk
