Dan
Just looked at the Error log on my control panel and found this.
Does it mean anything to you??

[fp-auth] [error] authenticate failed using /home/uncoverd/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd user=Nigel at /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/fp-auth line 157.
[Sun Feb 8 09:04:23 2004] [error] [client 64.246.161.30] File does not exist: /home/uncoverd/public_html/404.shtml
[Sun Feb 8 09:04:23 2004] [error] [client 64.246.161.30] File does not exist: /home/uncoverd/public_html/robots.txt

Thanks

Go by the colors:

[fp-auth] [error] authenticate failed using /home/uncoverd/public_html/_vti_pvt/service.pwd user=Nigel at /usr/local/frontpage/version5.0/apache-fp/fp-auth line 157.
[Sun Feb 8 09:04:23 2004] [error] [client 64.246.161.30] File does not exist: /home/uncoverd/public_html/404.shtml
[Sun Feb 8 09:04:23 2004] [error] [client 64.246.161.30] File does not exist: /home/uncoverd/public_html/robots.txt

This one means the logon password file for windows is incorrect, or the .pwd file used is corrupt. It can anything from a hacker, to a program being installed/uninstalled

This is a general error file that is missing, it is used to display "Unauthorised Access". It is linked to the above file

[
Web Robots etc. THis is required to run some component of FP and it is also used to run the FPSE's All it stores is the runtime information and is easily edited as it is a text file.

I hate to say this fella, but the only way round this one, that I have found so far, is to run a full reformat of the PC, re-install windows, then install the software in this order for it work properly:

Install a WYSIWYG Web Editor, or Office
Install PWS/IIS

Then install the rest of your programs, but obvioulsy backup the all important info etc

If anyone else knows a way round it, lemme know will ya?
Dan

Dan
I've got somebody coming to reformat for me tonight but I want to try everything before. Something Different has happened this morning. I've tried to publish again (well, you never know!!) like this
Heres what I'm doing step by step and the messages I'm getting
1. Open web with my own password
2. Click publish. Click 'More Webs'.
3. Type in http://my site name.com. I don't tick the SSL box
4. I'm asked for Name: as supplied by host Password: as supplied by host. Click OK
5. Box appears saying
Server error. An error occured accessing your FrontPage web files.
Authors - If authoring against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this server's site.Webmaster's - please see server's system log for more details.
6. Click OK and I'm back into FrontPage explorer.

I've spoken to the hosts and there is definately no problems at their end. I tried to publish again after turning off all the anti virus software (just in case)

I now get the same box but it appears after step 3.

As you have transfered the web from one drive to another, you haven't told FP that it is a web folder. Open it as a web in FP, then try and publish it

Thanks mate. Tried it but still didn't work. Had the hard drive reformatted last night so we now should be clear. Here's where I'm up to.
I saved the site onto a CD and have now transfered to to a desktop folder.
I've imported the file and all sub folders into FP without a problem.
The files are there and I can access them but the web is not showing in the navigation view and the front page components are back to their original state ie not showing the links etc.
Originally the shared boarders were not showing but i turned them on in the Tools , Shared Boarders menu. Is there something else I have to do to get the rest working as per the original ??

When you say the web isn't showing in the Navogation view, do you mean:

1. You just get the webpages and subfolder?

2. Nothing?

Sounds like corrupt FPSEs, can't be sure though. The constant error is suggesting that account does not have FPSE enabled, on the ISP server, not the local. Double Check with your host, and ensure that they do have the FPSE enabled and are not corrupt.

Dan
I've contacted the hosts and they've removed all the files in the public_html directory and reinstalled the extensions so that I can publish to a clean sheet.

It's still not working and heres the lastest error report

[Thu Feb 12 15:14:45 2004] [error] [client 81.134.118.68] File does not exist: /home/uncoverd/public_html/404.shtml

Obviously I have a faulty copy of FP (which I've had for about five years and came with Microsoft Back Office .
My host has managed to post to my domain without a problem. I have tried to post a one page web and encountered the same again.
Is there anywhere I can get a cheap (and at the moment I mean CHEAP) new FP program from??
Thanks for your continued help Dan. Although we haven't sorted it it's been a great feeling knowing someone was out there who knows what they are doing.

Wow, such a long thread :)

Try http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&SortProperty=MetaEndSort&query=FrontPage

I think you can pick up a copy of FP 2002 for like $40 bucks. Goodluck!

If I understand your situation right, then these suggestions may help.

If your half finished site is simply files (or files within folders) then, if you do or can have a cd burner (or dvd burner) hooked up to the slave drive, then you should be able to burn the files to the cd and transfer them to your main drive.

OR

if your slave drive is connected to your computer and assigned to be another drive, such as E: (look under My Computer), then you should be able to simply drag and drop the files from your slave to your main drive (presumably your C: drive).

If you want to transfer your frontage Program I don't think you can copy and paste that from one drive to another. rather i think you will need to install (or reinstall) the program onto your hard or main drive.

it was 4 years ago since the last post so they've probably managed to do something with it by now :)
