DOC TYPE and Google - 2/11/2004 12:36:42
I heard that Google likes sites that conform to W3 standards, and sites that include the DOC TYPE tag within their site is an indication to Google of accessibility of the site, given that Google wants to deliver the best possible results to the widest demographic (including by browser types).

1. Is this true or an e-urban legend?
2. If we coded our site by hand, how can we then work backwards to ensure we are conforming to w3 standards and include a DOC TYPE that reflects the content on the page. (using HTML Tidy) will tell us our html looks proprietary, yet we don't know how far off we are from meeting a W3 standard.

Thanks in advance

Hi Josh and welcome to Outfront.

I'm afraid I can't answer your first question. As for the second just go to www.w3c.org and validate your page(s). Of course it won't validate unless you've declared a doctype. You might check at WDG on selecting a doctype.

Thanks Mike. The link to WDG is exactly what I needed.
Best,
Josh

Any SE is going to like a page that validates as the spider will not get "trapped" in it. However I have not heard of a boost in the algorithm for it. Just more a thing of natural selection.
