Protecting Photos - 2/14/2004 8:14:00
Hi

I want to protect my online photos.

Which is the best method, Watermark the photo, Disable Right Click and Save or some other way?

Can someone please explain how to go about doing the above procedures. I am very new to this!

Many thanks

The only sure fire way to protect them is not to put them on the www. That said, disabling right click will only deter web novices and perhaps not even them (as well as antagonizing those who use right click for other purposes). Anyone with any savvy can "view source" and follow the path to the photo, they can just do a screen capture or even pull the page up from their temp internet cache. For purposes of the web watermarking should generally serve your purpose (note: a skilled graphics person can bypass that as well).

And, I might add, a desperate and pitiful one at that. LOL

You can watermark them with a visible watermark which makes the photo unattractive.

You can watermark them digitally with something like Digimarc which leaves nothing visible on the photo but imbeds a coded watermark.

If you use something like Digimarc the proof of wrongdoing is up to you which in my estimation makes it an expensive and worthless product.

In short, like has been said many times before, if you don't want someone to steal it don't post it on theweb.

Also, raise the compression as much as possible without spoiling the image (keeping the image dimensions as small as possible) - it normally renders images useless if the theives need a larger copy to be of any use.
