PayPal allows non-member credit card purchases - 2/14/2004 10:06:28
PayPal has added some new features.

Customers can now purchase without having to sign up for a PayPal account.

From PayPal.com >>
quote:

Now your buyers can complete their payments first, and have the option of saving their information and creating PayPal accounts after the transaction is done. Transactions are easier than ever, so more buyers can complete their payments.

This change applies to the following Website Payments: Buy Now Buttons, Donations, and PayPal Shopping Cart. If you prefer to turn off this feature, you may do so by going to your Profile and clicking the Website Payments Preferences link under the Selling Preferences column.

Also, they have an auto return function to easily allow customers to return to your site after purchase, custom payment pages and even print US Post Office shipping labels.

Now we are being useful ;-)
That was one of the biggest complaints before, if theyve listened to feedback then its going to be a great system to use!

I see they have also added partial refunding as well. Nice moves.

This is welcome news. I'm sure they drove away many prospective customers with that archaic member rule

Where does it mention ANY of this on the PayPal.com web side?

PayPal mentions NOTHING of this anywhere to be found on their web site. Also, they have not sent an email stating this either.

Is this for real?

sorry we didn't post any updates on PDN, but we did post info about new features here:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/mer/news-outside

there's also a webpage most US-based business & premier accounts see upon login that describes the new "account optional" signup flow here:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/mer/WAX_landing
(must be logged-in to PayPal; may also be dependent on your geographical location -- text included below)

note the account optional feature is currently available only for US business & premier accounts and their customers, for Buy Now, Donation, and Shoppin Cart transactions. we hope to extend this functionality to other payment options and additional geographies in the near future.

for more info on recent updates, see:
http://paypal.typepad.com/
or
http://www.paypaldev.org/

hope you folks enjoy the new features :)

New Website Payments Checkout Makes Shopping Easier for Buyers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PayPal has optimized the checkout experience for buyers by launching an exciting new improvement to Website Payments. These changes apply to the following Website Payments: Buy Now Buttons, Donations, and PayPal Shopping Cart. They do not apply to Subscriptions buttons.

With our improved Website Payments checkout, purchasing online is easier than ever. Once customers have decided to make a purchase, they are walked through four easy steps:

Shipping information — Customers enter name and shipping address.

Billing information — Customers enter credit card information, email address and phone number. They also have the option to send a message to you.

Review of payment information — Customers review what they’ve entered to make sure it’s correct. From this point, they can either edit the information or complete checkout.

Save customer information with PayPal (optional) — To shop more quickly and easily in the future, customers can save their personal information they’ve already entered with PayPal. All they need to do is choose a confidential password and create answers to a few security questions.

To toggle off this new feature, simply log in, go to Profile subtab, click on Website Payment Preferences in the Selling Preferences column, and check the yes/no box under PayPal Account Optional.

Be sure to read the NEW PayPal Terms of Agreement and Privacy Notice issued about 3 weeks ago before you start jumping up and down.

I cancelled my PayPal account and will never do business with any site who offers only PayPal as a payment method, because I refuse to surrender all of my personal information to PayPal, even when using the new option. PayPal also "reserves" the right to disseminate, contact, and otherwise spread everything they collect about you to anyone and everyone and they don't have to tell you they are doing it.

e-businesses beware! I am going back to paper checks, postage stamps and ticking off the "take me off you mailing list" boxes.

Ok here is my view:

This confirms that the information practices of PayPal, Inc. have been reviewed and meet the standards of the Better Business Bureaus' BBBOnLine Privacy Program.
- Ok, so they are compliant with the BBB.

Here are a few quotes directly from PayPal"
quote:

PayPal will not sell or rent any of your personally identifiable information to third parties. PayPal will not share any of your personally identifiable information with third parties except in the limited circumstances described below, or with your express permission (and to other PayPal customers as described above). These third parties are limited by law or by contract from using the information for secondary purposes beyond the purposes for which the information is shared.

So my question is this. Are you lying? Or is PayPal's privacy statement wrong?

quote:

If you are a registered PayPal user, your name, e-mail address, date of sign-up, and whether you have verified control of a bank account are displayed to other PayPal customers whom you have paid or who are attempting to pay you through PayPal. If you are a Business account holder, we will also display to other PayPal customers the Web site address (URL) and customer service contact information that you provide us. However, your credit card number, bank account and other financial information will NEVER be revealed to anyone whom you have paid or who has paid you through PayPal, except if we are required to do so pursuant to a subpoena or other legal process.

- Yea thats great. If they did not display this information, I probably would not be using their service.

I have not read the entire agreement, but still lets see you prove your case. If this is true, I will prolly cancel my account too.

Good points, love the dialog. Very relieved PayPal has changed their policy. I hope they do it for subscriptions too.

- I am pretty sure this policy is good for ALL paypal payments. Includes subscriptions, too.

actually, that's not true at the moment... subscriptions still requires the account signup (hard for us to do recurring billing against a non-PayPal account, w/o contacting them for confirmation each time).

Buy Now, Donation, and Shopping Cart txns are supported with the new method ("PayPal Account Optional"), and don't require signup.

This is available for US-based merchants currently, and we hope to expand this to non-US merchants in very near future...

Dave

If you're about, is there any time-frame for non-US accounts? And any possibility of Paypal adding AUD$?

Cheers
Andy

hi andy -

sorry, i don't have any release dates at the moment. i'm hopeful we'll be able to expand coverage in just a few months, as i do know it's high on the list for the Intl team, but it may be rolled out at different times depending on country.

also don't know the timing on AUD$ support, but i'll see if i can find out & get back to you.

- dave
