DNS won't update & registry error - 2/15/2004 15:00:54
Hi, I recently changed hosting cos and changed my DNS settings on 2/4. They still have not updated. ISP is blaming host and vice versa. Hoping someone here can help. Here is some info that may help: I canceled my old host, but when I ping I still get old ISP; new host gave me a temporary URL to publish to (using FP 2000) and it works; however when I go to publish to our true domain/URL, I get:
'Server error: Error 2 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80.'

Don't really want to get into the Registry reconfiguration, plus I'm not sure if that is the problem since I can publish to the temp URL. Is this just a simple case of DNS servers in our area taking forever to update? I am so frustrated so any help would be very much appreciated!!!!! Thanks!

well, here's what M$ has to say:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;264922

Is the old ISP also providing you with your internet access? It sounds like it still all boils down to the old ISP not updating the DNS. From the M$ article, I would say that the DNS records have not been updated or the DNS cache needs refreshing. Since FP is not able to find the new location it is trying to publish to your computer and not finding the PWS or the folder within PWS to publish to.

10 days is way too long for those changes to take place. Recheck the DNS servers at the registrar, and continue to bug the old ISP...

If you have NT/2K/XP or a linux box around you can verify the DNS for your domain yourself.

Start by doing a whois and verify the correct nameservers are authoritative for your domain.

Use nslookup or dig on linux to see what DNS has for your domain. You can point nslookup at one of the authoritative name servers to be sure. If the IP is right in the nameserver, then there is some exceptional problem preventing your domain from propagating.

Or maybe you have a hosts file entry on your computer pointing to the old IP? A hosts file entry will override any DNS server information from your box.

Thanks to both of you for responding. I’m now in the 12th day and still not up. I’ve checked the host file and that seems to be okay. I really think it is a local Roadrunner DNS issue, because people in other parts of the country can access the page and even local non-Roadrunner people can too.

Question: Back to my original post where I said I get the following message when trying to publish via FP 2000: 'Server error: Error 2 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80.' Why would I get this message only when trying to publish to the domain in question, not the temp URL the host set up for me (see original post)? If there was a problem with the Registry wouldn’t it affect all publishing? I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t want to mess with the Registry Editor if I don’t have to.

Could this error message be a result of the local DNS servers not being updated for that particular domain? Thanks!!!! Shannan

That is exactly what it is. No need to do anything with the registry.

I have a similar problem using ipowerweb's hosting service, but i know it is not a dns problem.

(Server Error: Error 2 opening registry key "SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\Ports\Port 80)

Our domain had transferred and work was being done on the site when i noticed that every time i opened a page to edit it, Front page was making duplicate image files.

I've seen this before when the Front Page extensions were corrupt so i went into my admin and removed the front page extensions with a mind to reinstalling them and republishing to restore the navigation structure.

Although the admin panel showed FP extensions installed, there were no corresponding extension folders in the nav structure when I checked in my file manager.

The site has now been down for going on to 4 days with no sign of a fix implemented by ipowerweb, in fact the only response I can get from them is "We are working on it".
