Help! service.lck error! - 4/30/2001 18:07:00
Hi everyone,

I just signed up with this group today in the hopes that SOMEONE on here will be able to help me! :-) Please forgive the length!

Here's my problem...

My computer has been acting "crazy" for the last month...giving me all sorts of strange error nessages, freezing up, having to reboot, etc. I finally got to the end of my rope and decided the best thing to do would be to back up all of my information and restore the computer to it's original settings. I saved everything onto CD, restored the computer, & re-loaded all of my software. I thought for sure this would solve my problem. Well...it solved that problem, but now I have another.

While I was re-installing FrontPage 2000, I got the following message...

"Setup has detected MS Personal WebServer installed with FrontPage Extensions. Setup must temporarily stop the server to continue. Do you want to stop the server and continue with installation?"

I then clicked yes...

Later on I got another message...

"Unable to read configuration information for MS personal WebServer. Error code: 1723"

So...I continues with the installation hoping everything would be alright. Afetr setup is complete, I try opening FrontPage for the first time. I go into "my Webs" and then go to open up my website and get the following message...

"Server error: Cannot open file 'C:\MyDocuments\My Webs\joeyoey\_vti_pvt\service.lck' for writing"

I did a little research and found this is a common error message, but the advice I found doesn't seem to work. I was told to FTP out to the server and delete the 'service.lck' file. I did that, but everytime I open FrontPage back up again (& try to publish) I get the same message. When I go back into FTP, the file is BACK again!

Is there anyone out there that can help me? If so, please try and explain it so an idiot (smile) can understand. Thanks soooo much for any and all help!

Joey

ok, i know your tired of this but lets start from scratch. uninstall fp and pws, reboot the system. you didn't mention your os but your using the term pws so that tell me your runnng win95 or 98??? anyway after the system reboots dig around to make sure pws is all the way removed; i.e look in root and make sure there's no inetpub or wwwroot directory. if there is delete all of it.

if this is where your website lives and no where else on your local machine make sure you copy it out first.

now install pws from either the fp cd or from the MS site. don't take it from the win98 cd if thats your os.

don't configure the server extensions yet.

load fp

now install the server extensions in pws and configure you default web.

need more help, post back...

good luck
