NT Server Questions - 5/7/2001 13:31:00
Hi,

We are planning to build a server and are looking for some advice. We will be hosting at least one website on it. The site is being designed with FP2000 that is reliant on an Access 2000 DB to function. A friend told us that we need to get Windows NT version 4 with service pack 6A. We also know that we need an email component.

What other criteria do you need to know so that we can get this thing put together correctly.

Regards,

End IF}

Why NT4? 2000 Server is more than worth the price difference.

Hi Gil

I never heard of Server 2000. Is it a Microsoft product? I need to have an IIS server and I know that this coms with Windows NT. Am I missing something here?

NT4 was the last version, the current version is Windows 2000 Srver. 2K comes with IIS5, which is a great improvement over IIS4.

Take a look here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/guide/server/overview/default.asp

Hi Gil,

I took a look. It looks like you know what you're talking about. I on the other hand am just learning this stuff. Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong, since I don't even have NT it would be a much wiser choice for me to go with server 2K becasue this will do everything that NT can do and more.

I believe I need the basic version, the one with 10 CALs which I probably won't ever need, and sells for $1200. Right?

How much is NT going for these days?

What about the email component? I understand that I need to get this as well. Spooky mentioned ASPMail, or something like that.

We have also planned to go with an Asus K7 Motherboeard at 1000Mhz, 512RAM, 2 x 30G HD 7200rpm 100ATA, and a 100mb Network card. Oh yes theres a CD ROm in there too!

Does the type of website we are running become a factor?

Thanks In Advance

Sounds OK for basic web stuff.

I am not sure you can still find a copy - should be real cheap if you can.

That all depends on what you need. IIS has a SMTP coponent and you can send mail without any additional applications. If you plan on having a mail server (you'll need an additional box) take a look at Imail from Ipswitch - great program and a no brainer to set up and administer.

I'd forget the IDE drive - go SCSI and stay around 10GB

Sure - what are you planning? What do you have for bandwidth? T1?, OC3?

Dealer, Don't go too crazy spending money on the server hardware. For a single site you could get away with a low cost box:

600MHz p3 (more than you'll ever need probably, if you're worried get a dual CPU board and run one CPU and when ready drop the second one in. webservers love the second cpu)

128MB RAM (good enough, 256 better, 512 probably too much. I would buy a 256MB DIMM and install more as needed)

HD .. get a 7200RPM IDE if you want to save money. go with 10K RPM U2W SCSI or similar if you want ultra performance but honestly you'd be safe with the IDE.

Long story short, spend what you're comfortable spending. I don't know what type of traffic you're expecting to see but you probably don't even need the P3, you could probably get away with a celeron if it's just one site.

I'd be worried about the access database more than anything else. Access is going to be your bottle neck if you get more than 20-25 concurrent sessions running. You might want to see if your host has SQL server available and be ready to upsize should you see performance start to hurt.

I agree with Jess about not over spending, especially if you're only running one or two sites. I would however go with a SCSI drive if you are going to run any back-end scripts or any database applications. And with RAM so cheap now get more than you think you'll need - 256 min.
