Simple (?) hover button problem in FrontPage 2000 - 2/24/2004 4:37:53
I have my own website (www.xyresic.co.uk) that I built at home using FrontPage 2000 on XP Pro. However when I try to look at it on the internet or edit it from my PC at work (also running XP Pro/FP2k), none of the hover buttons are working - all I get is an empty box with a red cross in it????

The actions I have taken so far are:

I have checked the pathname of the image I am using on the hover button and that is correct.
I have re-published my website.
I have deleted all temporary internet files.
I have tried refreshing the screen (including ctrl + refresh).

Even editing it in FP2k on my work PC and inserting a simple hover button from the menu (without a covering image), it still doesn't show up in the preview pain?

Can anyone suggest why this might be?

Is there a setting I need to change on my PC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
supahoopsa.

If you are enquiring about the Java Buttons to the left of your page, they work fine here, but will not work if you don't have a Java Environment program installed on the computer.

However

If you are talking about the hover buttons from FP2000 that use images, it can often mean that the images either have 0kb file size (which means they are corrupt), or they don't exist.

I am referring to the FP2000 hover buttons that use images.

I have checked the images (in the images sub directory). They all have a suitable disk size and I can view each of the images.

I only have this problem on my PC at work. From my home PC this website looks and works perfectly OK.

It must be a setting on my work PC, so I have checked all my IE 6 options and they look OK. It was then I discovered that these buttons aren't even working from within FP2000 itself.

Any ideas?

It shouldn't be any problem from PC to PC, have you tried publishing down to the PC from you host, that should download all images etc to the local machine, and then see what happens when you edit the web through FP

I haven't tried to download my code from the host to my work PC, but I have backed up my whole website from my home PC and copied onto my work PC.

I created a separate folder for the site and within that I can see all the sub directories, including the images directory. I can see the required images perfectly inside this directory and I can also view them from within the FP2000 folder list.

I have run the FP2000 reports and this doesn't show any obvious errors.

When I look at the website in FP2000 in the "normal" pain, the buttons look perfect, but when I switch to the "preview" pane, I just get blank boxes with a red cross in them????

The buttons are in a shared (left) border, but what I really can't get my head around is that they look and work perfectly OK at home?

Thanks for your advise so far, it is REALLY apprecitaed

it's starting to sound like a faulty copy of FP, ummm, have you run any windows updates recently? And also (I'm good at this) do you customise XP by editing Windows Components at all?

I was beginning to think it might be a faulty copy of FP, but that doesn't account for the images not working when browsing the site on the Internet.

I did run a set of MicroSoft windows updates a week or so ago, but this was happening before then.

I have been trying to figure this out for ages now because to be honest, it seems such a simple fault I was almost too embarressed to ask for help.

As for customising XP, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Can you do me a favour and take a look at www.xyresic.co.uk and let me know if you can see the four navigation buttons on the left hand side. They should be the same colour blue as the top banner and they should say Home, Design, Portfolio & contact Us from top down. If you hover over any of the buttons ">>" should appear in front of each word.

Their Java Buttons my friend, they will only show up on Java enabled browsers. I'm not saying that it is, but pirate copies of XP also tend not to come with Java Software Environment programs installed. They are Java because If you right click on them, you will navigate to the designated pages etc.

The images you see will be what the Java is using to control the view of the buttons. In your Internet Options, go to Advanced and ensure that Microsoft Virtual Java Machine is checked, if not, look in the Security section and ensure that Java is enabled on the "Internet Custom Options". If you can't find it, the easy way round it is:

Go to http://download.com.com and look for Sun Java, that should offer a download for a Java Environment Software download, download it, and install, then try.

They will appear in the Normal View (WYSIWYG) because they are being displayed as an image for ease, but when you go into IE of Preview mode, it will look for a Java Environment program to run, and if it doesn't find one, you will get the image border with the red cross.

Many, many thanks Dan,

My copy of XP pro should be pucker as it was supplied OEM. I have recently installed MS Visual Studio enterprise architect and I thought this should possibly help with Java.

Anyway I am now downloading NetBeans 3.4.1 from Download.com and once installed I will try again.

Your help is really appreciated.

Cheers,
Rich.

Cheers guys.

To be honest I hadn't even thought about Opera & Firebird.

Is there any reason why these browsers are so slow?

Is there a simple fix I can make to improve the performance?

Should I be that concerned that these browsers are so slow - are they in use much?

Sorry if these questions appear to be simple, but these are new to me.

Not sure on this one, as it loads fine in Firefox (the most recent version of Firebird), it might just be their compatability with Java, or not as the case may be.

Don't use Java:)

The more obscure browser that are not very well known, are coming up in the market, and fast. I think that the Mozilla browsers are the fastest movers. It's mainly because people are bored with IE and want somethinf different, and you find exactly that within Firefox. It also renders CSS and the like a hell of a lot better than IE.

Hope that clears things up for you. If not, I'm here till friday, and off for the weekend, as per usual

Dan

Again, this is probably a very naive question to ask, but what you recommend I use to create these buttons if Java is so slow - native html?

HTML won't give any reall effect to it. Take a look at the nav bar on my site (very much underconstruction, but it works). HTML isn't all that good for nav bar links etc, but you can use CSS and JavaScript. Wanna learn?? Join us in the CSS forum, and email me for a quick JavaScript tutorial, I have a beginners guide somewhere on this bucket o' bits..:)

Forget Netbeans.xxx from download.com - nothing ever happened after waiting for well over an hour. I downloaded the Sun JRE in about 10-15 minutes and now everything works fine.

Many, many thanks to Giomnanach for his help and for proving that I wasn't going mad after all !!

Looking at your DoB on your profile, you're probably not old enough to remember the famous 5-5 draw between the Toon Army & the mighty supa hoops at Loftus Road? QPR 0-4 down at half time, get back to 4-3 with < 5 minutes to go, Newcastle then make it 3-5 and then QPR get two late, late goals to make it 5-5. Truly the most amazing game I have ever watched.

Always had a soft spot for the toon after Sir Les left QPR for them.

Good luck for 4th place...beat those miserable scousers PLEASE !!

Thanks again for your help.

No I don't, that match was about 3 months before I graced this world with my presence :):):). Who said anything about 4th place, I want top 3 (doubt we'll get it though)
