FP extensions down - 5/7/2001 18:31:00
My webmaster(hoster) offers FP extensions. After crashes or other problems, these extensions are no longer active. At least not until i can call and get the hoster to reactivate them. How can I use frontpage to publish w/o server's extensions? Can I somehow use the html tab to my advantage? even If I want to publish one sentence "under construction."

You say this as though it were a normal thing - it is not. I would suggest you consider moving to a new host who is able to provide you with better stability. At the very least you should be able to reinstall the extensions yourself from your control panel. Once again I will say it - I am totally amazed at how many people put up with this sort of thing. You can upload pages using FTP. In my experience once you do not change anything that uses FP components uploading will do no harm, so simple text changes are no problem. But then I am talking a different host - 17 sites with one and I have NEVER, repeat NEVER, had a single problem with extensions. ------------------ Katherine InKK Design LinKKs - Kilkenny's Online Magazine -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Dogs have owners, cats have staff!"

Thanks, for the advice. Downloaded an FTP program...it took a few more steps than publishing w/ FP, but it still did the job. Thanks again.

Careful when using an FTP program, you could definately corrupt your extensions. It's better to use the FTP built into FrontPage if you want to publish via FTP. If you do use FTP please understand that your FrontPage WebBots/Components WILL MOST LIKELY NOT WORK.------------------ Applied Innovations http://www.appliedi.net/ FrontPage Web Hosting

I cannot speak for every situation but my experience on this has been the following. If you use FP components and FTP to the site the FIRST time you publish you will have problems. Of course if you make major changes or reorganise the navigation or add/ remove FP components or whatever, then you need to publish again. However if you published the web initially and if any subsequent changes you make are to text or simple content only, FTPing to the site does no harm. Certainly if you are just changing say one paragraph on one or two pages in a fairly large site it is much more convenient to just change that page and FTP it than to sit through a whole publish routine.
I do this all the time - several times daily on several sites and have never had a problem. I use ws_ftp because I like it. But I can only speak for myself. As I said before, 17 sites with one host and never a single extensions problem at all. ------------------ Katherine InKK Design LinKKs - Kilkenny's Online Magazine -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* "Dogs have owners, cats have staff!"
