FTP programs - 2/24/2004 17:09:14
I use Front Page 2000 to make my webs, however, I don't make anything that requires FP extensions, and have always uploaded my webs via WS_FTP95. Today while uploading folders that contained multiple background tile files (thumbnails and larger images of the thumbnail), the WS_FTP program either lost connection, gave some various errors, closed connection prematurely or some other frustrating event. It took me 2 hours to upload my additions because I had to do open each folder and upload about 10 files at a time, and even then I got the occasional error from WS_FTP and had to close and reopen it and start again. I've had problems like this in the past with it, but for some reason today just seemed the worse. Is there another good FTP program out there? Preferably a free one, but if it's a buy one, and not too expensive, then that will be ok as well. I don't wish to use Front Page to publish as each time I tried that in the past I had even more headaches with errors and stuff than with WS_FTP95. FPT programs are just easier, simpler...and usually faster (exept for recently)... for me to use.

Can you please check that link? I get "Page cannot be displayed". I tried the main page of that link: http://sourceforge.net which opens but I don't see anything called Filezilla there. And I tried clicking on the "software map" tab, and don't know what catagory it is found under. And I tried: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ and get an error saying "Invalid Project".

You can go with the "setup" version, or the smaller zip which probably contains the setup version, but you will need to uncompress. -brian

Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That program is a bit daunting to look at, but the help section has some excellent screenshots to walk you through getting something uploaded. What took me about 7 minutes in WS_FTP95, was accomplished in 1/2 that time. I had some zip files to upload, and I noticed that while they were uploading, that the program continued to upload the other files! I am definitly making this my default FPT program. And for those who haven't tried it? Try it!! Thanks again :)

Are Smartftp or Filezilla still the free ftp programs of choice? I've been using WS_FTP for years but it only stores info for about five sites. Also, once the info is saved, it seems you can't change/store it (eg. a new password). thanks, gail

Filezilla - By far the best. I was using LeechFTP, but it kept timing out, now I have no problems at all Dan
