bizarre frontpage 2000 extensions problem - 5/10/2001 23:50:00
hi.

I have a customer who is having a bizzare problem that im not sure how to solve. HE designed a site using frontpage 98 and was still using the frontpage 98 extensions. Today we decided to upgrade to the 2000 server extension. Once this had been completed we checked out his index.htm and 3/4 of the page is missing. All of his side hover links, headers, footers etc. There is only one paragraph of text and the meta information between the <head> tags. Ive checked the document on the server and the code is missing too. Its like it never existed. He swears he never uploaded anything new. Im not sure what to tell him. Im completely flabbergasted(sp?) Any suggestions?
Comments?

thanks in advance

If I understand you correctly, you installed 'new' server extensions on the server (i.e. you deleted the extension files containing 'his' specific information.

All he should have to do is publish the whole site again and everything should be back to normal.

The extension files you put on the server are 'empty' until they're published to. Each time the site is updated, new information is added so he must publish the whole site - choosing the 'overwrite' option. Hope this solves the problem

I remember when my host upgraded to 2000 extensions. It blew out my theme, my shared borders, and my FP nav component configuration.

I just about died. So did about 80,000 other Hiway FP webmasters. There was no way to recover it. I just had to build it again.

If your client is now using FP 2000 and is using a 98 theme, he can open that theme in 2000 theme view > save as a new theme > apply that, and all will be well.

He will have to rebuild his navigation in the nav view, however.

Provided the client has a current copy of the web on his computer, he shouldn't need to rebuild the navigation. I had this happen with a very big site (about 800 pages) when the server lost the extensions - thought I'd have to rebuild from scratch (GROAN) but was able to locate the relevant files up to fix it.

The files you need are in the _vti_pvt folder - I'd ftp the whole lot up although I believe the critical ones are deptodoc and docto dep.

It beats rebuilding a big site. These files are not visible in FP but can be seen in explorer.

Hey guys thanks alot. I should tell you something. This customer doesnt have a back up of his site on his own harddrive. He just made all changes live to the site. I think he is going to have trouble. We do back ups but not as often as I guess he would like and I feel bad but I think if you are creating sites using frontpage then remember to ALWAYS keep a current version of your site on your own harddrive.
Does anyone have any suggestions for helping get his site back up to normal as quickly as possible ?

Thanks

What a silly billy (your client!) The best you're going to be able to do is restore his site to where it was at the time of your last back-up. Hopefully, the back-up will include the old vti_private folder contents which will restore his navigation etc.

It is the big drawback of doing changes 'live' - I do it in an emergency but always try to remember to save the file that's changed back to the hard drive. I hope this will have taught him the error of his ways. Good luck!

You would be suprised at the amount of people that dont back up there sites. Its kinda scary. The host does have a responsibilty but things can always go wrong, and the generally do if its going to cause alot of problems.
