setting up bulletin board - 2/25/2004 22:32:27
hi all!
i'm looking for an easy to use bulletin board program. free is best.
i want to control access to only those who are clients of ours.
my host provider at valueweb says they have a free cgi script for our use, but there's no support for it. i also had trouble downloading it.
the site support says that we aren't bound to using only theirs; and we could use any "CGI/Perl/PHP Script that is compatible with our Linux servers."
what do you recommend?
thanks.

tjpitches,

Saw this post and not sure if this applies, but here's my story.

I'm using phpBB and it's FREE and fairly easy to setup [ thanks to BobbyDouglas]

I wanted a BB setup as well, my host is Yahoo! Well, even with their hosting one cannot speak directly with the "php gurus" about setting up their board. I personally do not understand MySQL & PHP etc. so I was stumped for email support with a 24-48 hour turn around. Yuck! :)

So while browsing through Outfront I posted some questions and "BobbyDouglas" responded. After discussing a few other topics I was impressed with his responses and patience that I deceided to research his business. He designs & hosts websites and is very very knowledgable.

To make a long story short, he now hosts my website(s), I've since transferred 3 domains and it took us just about 2 minutes & 3 mouse clicks to get my phpBB setup. He has great support and allot of web tools to assist.

The reason why i'm emphasing this sooo much is, when you need support, you need it fast and at the level where you understands and get your site or BB completed. He was there for me.

I'm currently waiting for my name servers to update.

Here's my BB: http://layoff.us/forum/index.php

Cheers,

Sheldon.

Your Linux server probably has a BB, just needs to be turned on. Usually it's Invision Board, which is an excellent BB script. I think there is support for the IB in this forum, it's really easy to set up. If not there is an IB forum here. Like the man said "two minutes and three mouse clicks"

<edited>Looked at your host, ValueWeb. It really looks like they're pushing the whole Macromedia thingy. That is OK as long as you are a registered owner of the Macro.. product, I forget what it's called. You could probably get a free BB script from their website, as long as you are a registered owner. Otherwise you will have to have to upload and install some kind of Bulletin Board script. Lately, PHP has been doing pretty good. Both of the PHP scripts mentioned in this post are good, Invision Board, and phpBB. They require databases which can be set up automatically as long as you have MySQL.</edited>

Not trying to start a fight here, but I would like to make one point of why I reccomend phpBB board over Invision Power Board. Basically, IPB is not free for their basic version (they do offer a free trial with some features disabled). phpBB however is 100% free. phpBB has a VERY large community associated with the board, along with almost every single feature you could think up of.

If vB has it, phpBB has it. If IPB has it, phpBB has it.

- Jumping in here kinda late, I suggest you e-mail your host and ask them for some assistance on setting it up (if you don't know how). If they refuse- most hosts will- then try to set it up yourself. Maybe goto the place to download it and ask for some help on their forums.

All else fails, someone here would prolly help set it up for you.
:)

In keeping with BobbyDouglas reasons for using phpbb, I am a beginner at webdesign and setup...and I installed my own phpbb...check this out.

Goodjob! It isn't that hard to set up at all. :)

Some hosts will have scripts already able to be installed on the server. Which Sheldon was pointing out, how he had to just click a few buttons, and it installed the script.

Only thing I wouldn't care for is your red font. Doesn't really appeal to me. But I am not too fond of having a dark colored board just because it does not attract users as much as having a light colored board.

hi all!
well, i'm back. i wanted to update you all on my quest to find a free BB and install it on my site.
i started out with checking valueweb, our host, (who i'm happy with) to see if they had one. they DO offer a freebie, called wwwboard.
i didn't like the way it looked, compared to some of the others i've seen. they also made it clear that while they offer the option to install it, they don't support it.

so, now i'm off to check out phpbb.
hope i have the same luck GTE had at shackwaterjack ...

For what it's worth, here's my 2 cents on phpBB vs. Invision:

phpBB2 -- Advantage is that it is simpler to set up, and the interface is a little cleaner. To do much of anything that is nearly as powerful as what Invision delivers, you need to install a 3rd party "mod" (usually with poor instructions for installation).

Invision -- It delivers far more power, "right out of the box," than phpBB. Yet the code is 1/3rd the size: version 1.3 Final of Invision requires 5.3mb to install, vs. 15.7mb for phpBB 2.0.6c.

Both require an available database, typically MySQL.

I would recommend either, depending on the client and their target market. If they can use either, I would definitely suggest using Invision. I would not suggest using any other free bulletin board, particularly Yabb, Ikonboard, or UltimateBBS -- they are resource hogs, and many web hosts ban them (we do).

hi everyone!
i'm back -- and i did it!!
thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
WOW was that fun!! i was able to install phpbb without any snags. now i am fine-tuning the boards, shoring up the permissions, and will soon let'r fly.
thank you, truly, to all who helped with suggestions and opinions. once again, this board has proven why it's the best the web has to offer.

more later,

me again!
what fun the phpbb is! sorry for all the enthusiasm -- many of you could have easily done this, but for me, this was a big step.
so now my question is, if i set this up to be a private place for birth mothers to discuss and support each other ... could i set up an entirely different board for our china adoptive parents to exchage information??
i don't want the adoptive parents anywhere NEAR the other group i created, due to the confidential nature of discussions.
thanks.

RE: setting up bulletin board - 4/20/2004 22:43:46
no, it really wasn't -- thanks to you and lori!
i found a hack that "hides the memberlist" to guests, or nonregistered users.
i saw another post where they said i didn't need a hack, i only needed to change the guest group permissions...
the MOD looks easy to install but ... it'd be easier to change permissions.
any easy way to block curious guests from looking at our member list?

If you want to REALLY get down to business with it, my friend has a very nice MOD that he along with a small team created. PM me if you want the link to it. Basically, it is everything you need to do to your phpBB board to make it SEO. Especially it removes the SIDs.

Hello all,
I read through this post string because of my interest in finding a suitable bulletin board.
I'm going to jump in here on this string in hopes of getting some input from the obviously knowledgeable people in here.
I too am looking for a bulletin board, but not the typical, interactive, forum-type board. I need a simple bulletin/message/announcement board for a community web site I create using FP 2002. I have very limited experience in web design and basically am just going by the seat of my pants to create this site. (www.scenicheights.net.)
I would like a message board, like the old fashioned cork board, where residents can post announcements about yard sales, picnics, etc.
I cannot find what I'm looking for.
Does anyone know of such a product? Or, can you recommend someone to create it? I would be willing to pay a reasonable amount (remember, this is a community service web site.)
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

A guestbook might do more the sort of thing you want. I use Eguestpro but there are lots out there. Have a hunt round www.hotscripts.com. Either ASP or PHP depending on your host.
