FTP & FP2000 - 5/21/2001 23:51:00
I've agreed to help a friend with a website and he's been used to using his FTP program to upload info.

I, on the other hand, use FP 2000 and never really have understood what FTP is.

He asked me today if, once I create the website in FP, he can continue to upload files etc. the way he always had, using FTP.

I haven't the foggiest idea what to tell him. I can't imagine he can just put pages up without me first organizing and formatting it in FP, but what do I know?

If YOU know, can you clue me in?

Barbara

Eek! I think you have two problems.

FTP is no real problem although everyone says you shouldn't use it with FP - I do with 3 sites and have no real problems - it works very like organising your files in explore.

BUT - if you change - say - a top border, or a navigation bar in FP, you have to Move up all the pages that these apply to.

Now - if you are working in FP and your client/friend tries to ftp files up willy nilly I suspect it will be bedlam.

If he has to do updates, you could set up an 'include page' and just let him update that and ftp it to the server but it really depends on how much he wants to update - it could get complicated!

To add to that - if you're just doing the design and he's going to maintain it (in Front Page??) then there's no real problems in him updating it with ftp (as long as he remembers to upload everything to which a change applies.) The problem if if he doesn't know FP.

There is actually no problem with FTPing as long as you are not using anything that requires FrontPage extensions. I recently put a list of these things here: http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003788.html

though I cannot vouch for it's accuracy.

I have made several sites using primarily FP which do not use extensions. It takes a bit of thought - remembering to use SSI rather than Include Pages and so on - but can be done.

Hmmmm.... I *think* I understand. Since it's going to be a fairly straightforward site (text and graphics for the most part ... no scripts or databases, etc), he'd probably only be adding text pages. I, of course, could go in an "tweak" them later with FP2000.

My only real concern was something I read about FTP corrupting the FP extensions.

I may test it out on one of my other "in progress" sites and see what happens.

Thanks for the feedback. It's great to know I can always rely on this forum for information and support. I only hope I reach the point where *I* can help others here -- kind of a "pay back" if you know what I mean....
