Image problem.. - 3/3/2004 16:07:30
I've not run across this since I was still using BMP's and IC

I built this nifty little GIF logo in Photoshop... but it looks like junk everywhere but on my test page. IOW, I emailed copies to a couple of people and the email copy looks terrible.

I'm gonna post it here to see what it looks like and see if anybody has any suggestions...

It's a 256 color GIF, no transparency, I used basic layer styles and a couple simple filters... anti-aliasing all around... No dither on the GIF.

Thumbnail Image
:)

<edit>

See how dull the colors look? How washed out? At home last night it looked like polished chrome...

Also, the disk around the "91" seems to have lost all of the layer styles I applied to it... it's just a flat disk.

I'm gonna try resampling it from the PSD file tonight...

I've never run across this before with a colorful GIF image.

When I saw "Image Problem" & Bobby's name, I never imagined it was anything to do with a graphic :):)

Why not leave it as jpg? I'd say that the PSD is seeing 257+503 more colors.

I don't know Bobby, I tried a couple of things but seem to only make it worse.:)

Bobby

256 colors for a graphic like that is way too low, it needs to be at least 16bit color (16bit not 16 colors), and when they need detail, like this one, it should always have anti-alias and be saved to either png or jpg, yes gif keeps the filesize down, but do that through the optimiser, never straight to save, and I use the PSP Export to Gif Optimiser for that, that way, you can see the original, next to the optimised version, and determine the amount of compression, number of colors and you can view the download times.

BTW, here it looks fine, just the background flames look a bit fuzzy, as if you just threw them in with the paint brush

LOL, my reputation precedes me...

I tied PNG vs. GIF first, then JPEG as well... in 4-up in Photoshop they all looked identical.

That was part of the problem, the flames were at around 70% opacity because they were a little bit too strong for the text...

I went in and played some more, rearranged a few things in the layout and it seems to be better. It looks like when I cropped and flattened the image before I exported the GIF I lost some of the styles.

That was easy enough to fix...

I think I've got it where I need it to be.

Very funny, :)
Oddly enough the only thing I'd had to drink was Mt. Dew... :P

No worries Dave, if it wasn't any fun to post what point would there be..?

Thanks for the feedback all... I think the changes I made last night are working, I'll tweak it some more and post back what I end up with.

Maybe tonight I'll have to add some vodka or whiskey to the mix...

Then if the image is a bit fuzzy I won't notice, LOL

I can't drink Dr. Pepper... that is, I drink too much of it...

If I have one, I have to have three or four more. A 2 liter bottle of "The Doc" usually only lasts a day or two at the most in my presence...

:)

Oh, and I am going to try a JPEG on this image, maxed out and not compressed at all... just to see if it's any clearer without getting too large... :)

To get a JPEG to look any better it was 3x the size... so I stuck with GIF and a few adjustments...

Still a work in progress, but you get the idea

would be interesting to see the original file - or rather a flattened tiff/psd (with the text rasterised)
if you can be bothered could you post a link to it?

Scary thought... that everyone could see the sloppy methods I use to create an image...LOL

I'll try to remember to upload the PSD file tonight and post a link to it. It could be interesting to see what other folks can do with the same source file...

If I remember correctly, the text has been rasterized and merged into a single layer... the first letter of each word (F and R) had to be built as images because the font I was using looked dumb in caps, so I built the "text" as four layers and eventually merged them.

(I tend to merge or delete layers that I wish I could undo an hour later, LOL)

Okay, so the domain has changed, so you'll find the template page at:

www.flammangracing.com/template.asp

and you can grab the PSD file at www.flammangracingteam.com/flammangracing1.psd

... if anybody still wants to play...

I was able to get a JPEG trimmed down to about the same size as the GIF, and it looks a little better :)

LOL!

Leave it to me to use the old domain name in the link... is that like writing last year on everything you fill out until the first week of Feb?

The PSD file is at: http://www.flammangracing.com/flammangracing1.psd

I'm using PS 6

... and yes, it's still a bit fuzzy...

:)

I don't recall the name of the font... but I can look it up at home. It was a free-bee that I downloaded some time ago.

Tight... LOL, that is the first time I have heard that in regards to my graphical work ( I have heard the term before, but elsewhere)... I assume that you mean that it looks ok then :)

That's incredible! (And yes, as far as I know "Tight" is still a good thing)

I spent about 5 hours on it, plus the time to rebuild the "F" and "R" and I'm still not happy with it...

:)

I've started rebuilding mine from scratch. I'm going see if I can get it to sharpen up a alittle bit. The flames were fun... that was my first attempt.

The outline was provided by a tatoo artist so all I had to do was stay inside the lines, LOL

I think I can get them to sharpen up a lot, but I also want to find a better font. I've been searching for a while now, nothing has jumped out and grabbed me yet...

I should've started this project sooner... one month to opening night.

Well let us know when you get it fixed the way you like it. I would love to see.
Sorry that I could not do much with your original, and totally took it in a different direction.
I guess I should have asked you first before totally remaking your logo :)

i like lori's creation but prefer the original idea
actually even taking the silk effect off the flames works better and takes away a little bit of the dullness.. but interested to see the rebuilt version.

you might also try starting with a lighter, brighter yellow (maybe 50% yellow) towards white and then take it to a purer red.

Lori -

No problem at all, I love to see what other people come up with for the same idea... if I didn't want you to play, I wouldn't upload the source file ;)

Dave -

I've actually done exactly what you recommended... got rid of the satin, and started with a much brighter yellow. I also played with some layering and shadow effects to try and give the flames a somewhat "wrapping" look around the "91"

Also, I went in with a little more burn & dodge tool in the flames, and I'm going to deepen the yellow in the text and try a better looking font.

I probably would have left it as it was had you folks not jumped in and played along with me, so thanks!

OutFront raises the bar again...
:)

I uploaded a change in process...

www.flammangracing.com/template.asp

I think I'm going to leave the text as is and not muddy it up with a bunch of effects... the flames look pretty cool now IMO.
