Server Extensions and XP - 5/29/2001 20:11:00
I have a little problem. I help run an IIS server hosting multiple web sites. One of these sites has recently been published using Frontpager Version 10 (XP).

However, I am now getting this error messgae:

"The server administration program and the server extensions on the web server are not compatible. The administration program is too old to use with this server"

I would like to uninstall the FPSE, but cannot - the same error messgae appears, any ideas?

I guess someone published something to that web that uses the new extensions. I'm thinking maybe you could have them delete whatever it is that was added, and then you could upgrade?

Or maybe just make a copy of that web > delete the contents > and then do your thing > then replace the web?

I'm having no problems using FP 2002 with FP 2000 extensions. I would have expected FP to prevent someone from publishing 2002-extension-specific content to a 2000 web. Maybe it was a beta that published.

I recently had major problems with a site that was hosted by an IIS server running 2002 extensions on a site managed and built with FP2000. It never did work right. I have no idea if this was due to some other influence, but I tried everything I know to solve the problem and never did get it corrected. We just said "Screw it" and converted to Dreamweaver, deleted the extensions and everything is working great now. BTW we stayed with the IIS server because that's what the shopping cart required. The only change? Dropping the extensions solved the probelm, as far as I could see.

Christ, when is Microsoft going to get rid of these STUPID extensions? 90% of the questions on this board are surrounding misuse, misunderstanding, and screw-ups of FP extensions!

Phil, you crack me up but your right . look at the board and it's either server extensions and forms or server extensions and publishing or server extensions and whatever.

now let me ask you this, i stopped using FP over a year ago (no flammers please i get mean when backed into a corner) and recently upgraded to dreamweaver ultradev which has the option of using webdav protocol to connect to and publish a web site. IIS 5.0 supports a webdav connection and i have to tell you it's been more reliable for me then publishing with server extensions ever was.

Does Fp2002 have this? it would seem strange if it doesn't because Office 2000 supports this. it's not the silver bullet for all things that ail server extensions but when you use this along with a good cgi form script (my favorite is from big nose bird) life is much better.

I also quit using FP for new sites, and also moved to Dreamweaver. I don't use Ultradev because I haven't had any database-intensive sites yet, but that day will come I'm sure. Dreamweaver is just the best!

However, I still have one site that I must use FP for; http://yosemitefun.com/ because I need the "shared borders". I have no database, no forms, and I always edit off the live server, and I have had no problems on a Linux/Apache server.

Knock on wood.

Phil,

Wouldn't it be possible to make the left shared border as a library item in DW? Click to insert on each page, and voila!
